Ok I Agree

Had a minor dust-up with Caleb Here about weather or not you should shoot a DA revolver in single action ever.

I must say his new post I 100% agree with.

New shooters are handed my S&W 617 and are taught proper grip, stance, and sight picture. Then the gun is loaded with a single cartridge and the gun is returned to them with instructions to cock the hammer with the gun down range. This way the relatively heavy DA trigger pull won’t distract them from all the new stuff to learn.

Once they start getting smooth with shooting 10 shots out of the wheel SA, I ask them to shoot DA. If they get tired its back to SA or quitting time.

Once a person is a consistent shot its DA all the time because it is the best training not only with running revolvers, but with semi-autos as well.

When I shoot my revolvers I shoot them double-action, unless I’m making very accurate slowfire shots…which isn’t very often.

Revolvers rule!

I second that! Revolvers make the world go round.

I have found — just recently, sue me I’m slow– that shooting my Ruger GP-100 in double action has helped improve my accuracy with my Taurus PT-145 or Sig SP2022.

I have to really practice the mechanical aspects shooting the GP100– results are very much evident if you don’t get it right.

If you can get a nice .22 to add to the mix (Even an old H&R or Iver Johnson, or the Taurus Tracker…maybe with an action job) you’ll be able to shoot more often for less money too!

The long slow trigger pull, while mechanically different than the short sliding trigger on my 1911, or to the various pre-charged DAO trigger pulls, the muscles and mechanics of your hand and body are VERY similar.

BTW when did you get a GP-100? I think those are FANTASTIC guns for the money. I prefer Smith&Wesson but I must say I can’t knock Bill Ruger’s monsterous revolvers.

      I really want this one

But there are several more practical guns ahead of it on the list.
