More Cops Behaving Badly

In New Orleans a cop pulls a pair of guns on an unarmed 17 year old kid. I gotta say this reeks of “Thug Culture” as it appears to be an escalation of “You disrespected me”. The cop resigned, but no criminal charges were filed, mostly from the kid not being clear if he felt threatened or not. I suspect more “thug culture”, as I wonder if he’s conditioned that one should never admit fear or back down, even when having two loaded guns being pointed at you by some crazed asshole.

In the video you can see the cop racking the slides on both the guns, unless he was verifying they were clear (which I severely doubt) he was piping rounds off the loaded magazines.

This doesn’t help ANYBODY! It makes good cops look like thugs with badges, and it makes citizens legitimately fearful that a cop will commit wanton violence against people knowing the PD will cover for their crimes.

and it begs the question: How often does crap like this happen that we DON’T hear about?

I’m not anti-cop at all. Just the opposite really, I’m glad we have a police force, and I personally know many good people who wear the shield, I’ve also had several encounters with exemplary officers. (One pair were the ones that arrested me when a warrant was issued because of a paperwork error, their superior officer got a call from me about how well they handled what could have been a HORRIBLE situation. Their commanding officer was pleasantly surprised, as generally a citizen calling about officer X is somebody with a bone to pick). I have also had some minor encounters with some pretty unprofessional guys.

And of course all this discussion of cops behaving badly has their equal share of assholes saying “Kill all the cops!” and “Cops are awesome, so we should forgive them for threatening to murder people over minor incidents.” Yeah that shit doesn’t help anybody either!

Funny, the latter sounds like it helps people. If there are still people out there suffering from the delusion that the police are on our side, I’d say they are definitely helped by anything which contributes to ridding them of that delusion.

If they aren’t on our side why do we have them?

Yes Bad cops, and crooked PDs are in it for themselves and they need to go. But overall law-and-order are good things.

Now if you’re a suspect you should NOT talk to the cops, except to state that you’d like to speak with your lawyer. But even that makes sense.

But a good police force is a good thing entirely.

A coworker related a story that a few years back he was mowing his yard while open carrying. The town cop pulled up, yelled and screamed that he couldn’t do that, and then proceeded to remove all the bullets from his magazine. My coworker explained to him that he had a CCW, that he was on his own property, and that open carry was legal anyway.

A call to the sheriff’s office brought an apology, but you’d think that with the prevalence of concealed carry, and guns in general, the police would know a little more about the laws.

Besides, aren’t they always telling us that ignorance of the law is no excuse when someone violates some century old outdated law? We get a fine or jail time. They get a “stern” reprimand.

One time I was at a gun law lecture given by the county state’s attorney. During the Q&A, I asked if I would be within my rights, if one night I noticed someone out in the yard trying to steal my car, to go outside with my gun and order them to leave.

Note that I did not ask if I could just go outside and blow them away, or hold them until police arrive.

A police officer in the back of the room stood up and said in his cocky condescending voice “Well, when I roll up and see you with a gun, I’m gonna pull my gun on you for MY safety! And I have training, but there’s not telling what could happen in that situation! Stay inside, it’s only property, and not worth my shooting you!”

I felt like pointing out that I’d just achieved my rifleman badge at Appleseed a few weeks prior, so I hope he doesn’t miss, because I won’t. But then, that would be a display of bravado that would have helped neither of us 🙂

Having grown up there, I just stopped reading at “In New Orleans”.

    That said it all.
