Sebastian linked this video

First I would say the officer in this case is the antithesis of the officer in this case. I won’t repeat what Sebastian says. Certainly this shows how foolish “Duty to Inform” laws work. Like most firearms laws, they’re written by people who don’t think of how things happen in reality. I’ve heard many people who will inform simply by handing both their driver’s license AND their carry permit to the officer when paperwork is requested. Same can be done verbally during this initial interview. Of course in this case the officer pays little mind to the driver until he loses interest in the alleged Prostitute and pimp.

I will also say in reference to both videos, officers should take context into mind over potential. Every stop has the potential of violence. In this stop everybody appears to be cooperating and following orders. I can’t see the driver, but I suspect he had his hands on the wheel and in plain sight the whole time. He was cooperating. Also even when the officer begins spitting, swearing, and threatening the man (as Sebastian notes, all should be sufficient enough to terminate this officer’s employment), the man is polite, and compliant.

A man with a holstered gun minding his own business shouldn’t be considered more of a threat over a swaggering, visibly unarmed man making threats and throwing his weight around. Certainly in this stop the only REAL crime I see being committed are criminal threats made by the officer.

One last point, when the officer exited the car and I saw the toned muscles, the close-cropped hair, and the confident swagger, I saw somebody who would be more at home in the show Jersey Shore, or doing coke off a coffee table in a frat house, than an officer. I saw a bully hiding behind a badge, not an officer working to uphold the law and keep the peace.

Now when I thought that I stopped myself and chastised myself for being so prejudiced. EXCEPT I WAS RIGHT!

The good officers need to speak out against pigs like this who do NOTHING but make their jobs harder.

Also thank goodness for digital recordings that bring such horrible acts to light, as well as keeping good officers in good standing.

**UPDATE** More from Lawdog who knows a thing-or-two about such things.

**UPDATE II** The cop’s name is Daniel Harless and is currently under investigation and on leave. We need to keep an eye on this guy for our own protection.

Saw this in the comments over at The Law Dog Files.

So the officer gets a paid vacation for being a professional thug?

That != win in my book.

I want him fired. Preferrably out of a cannon.

      …and into a wall.

        I’m with you fellers!

That being said its currently in the hands of IA. Hopefully they’ll see what we all do, and do the right thing (which probably won’t involve a cannon, but may involve a roid-head Joining Food Court Team 6 in the near future)

Let’s hold our water, and keep our eyes on the news.

Having watched the video (muted) I can honestly say this is the worst police encounter / traffic stop with a CCW holder I’ve ever seen!

I lost track of the number of times the Officer threatened violence against the driver. He also threatened the female at least once. He needs to be kicked off the force and put in jail.

    • Weerd Beard says:

Also the officer put himself in a LOT of danger when he searched the car and didn’t pay the least bit of mind to the driver in the driver’s seat.

negligence all around, I hope he’s working the food court in a polo shirt soon!

      • mike w. says:

Yeah, that was the 3rd thing I noticed about the video. massive tactical mistakes that go beyond just not paying attention to the driver and which could’ve gotten both he and his partner killed.

I’ll leave all of that for my post later though. What a goddamn clusterfuck. I thought the CCW holder handled himself fairly well given the circumstances.

Welcome to my World. Why do you think the Interstate Truckers call Ohio “Naziland?’

  5. Chris says:

Pretty horrible in many ways. I’ve seen quite a few of these type videos recently and it seems the police reaction is always similar in the fact that they think there will be some type of shooting or instantaneous gunfight every time they encounter a gun. I don’t get it. I don’t go diving for cover every time I see a police officer walking down the street. They carry guns too, and although I have to obey/listen to them and I treat them with respect I don’t automatically trust them. It’s the same situation as far as I’m concerned and i just don’t get it.

    • Weerd Beard says:

Given that this pig threatened to murder this man, and that his partner would cover for him over a misdemeanor, maybe you should….

      • Chris says:

Yea isn’t it sick it’s come to that consideration.

        • Weerd Beard says:

It is sick, and it shouldn’t be so. It should only be fucked-up anarchists and criminals who say that.

Still is there anybody here who will put a month’s salary down to bet that this guy is going to be charged with the severe crimes he committed?

Hell is there anybody who’d bet in favor that this guy will lose his badge?

I know he SHOULD lose his badge and face charges for the threats and abuse of power he did. He just might because of the national media attention. But I wouldn’t bet a month’s pay on it. No way, no how!

And now we all know cases like this happen all the time, but not all of them are national stories. Do ANYTHING happen to those cops? Overall the system covers for them.

Because of that, it isn’t unreasonable to think that an officer on the street may mean you harm simply out of the meanness in his heart.

          That needs to change.

If you pull up the Canton Ohio PD’s webpage, there’s a banner to the Facebook page. But, it’s not there any more. Neither is their Twitter account.

Hope these two looser cops are among this week’s unemployed numbers…
