Double Standards of the Antis

I’ll start with a quote from Linoge found here:

All “gun control” extremists have their irony meter removed upon conversion. Cult policy.

OK so we’ve talked about Joyce Foundation shill, and troll Jason Kilgore and his feelings on Martial Arts. The Operative quote was:

@ Bob: Not with a gun…I and my son are students of kung fu, and my wife practices haganah. We are all still relatively new to these martial arts, but its a start at self protection. Not as lethal as a gun, but you can’t accidentally beat yourself to death.

Well Jason has this up on his facebook page:

Seems Jason is pretty slick with a sword! He’s so proud of this it’s currently his profile picture.

Don’t see a lot of swords around these days. One reason is many places restrict the carry of them. Another big reason is they’re really good for only one thing, killing. Back in the day swords in a similar design to his were issued to ARMIES! Of course the Chinese also were masters of the Bow, but any avid bow hunter will point out that bows and arrows will put some serious meat on the table. I know a lot of shotgun hunters, a ton of rifle hunters, even a few handgun hunters. Know no sword hunters. To be fair I do KNOW OF some people who will hunt wild hogs with swords, daggers, knives, and spears, still most people prefer guns for piggies.

Swords are brutal weapons, inflicting serious and mortal wounds and capable of removing limbs. Heck I’ve reported several recent “Gun Death” stories where a sword was the murder weapon used. Jason Said: “but its a start at self protection. Not as lethal as a gun, but you can’t accidentally beat yourself to death.” That story suddenly changes when a sword is introduced, it’s kinda hard to chop somebody up “Just a little bit”.

BTW there are some interesting philosophies at his Dojo’s website. The beginner’s creeds are pretty basic good-citizenship statements. But at the higher levels there are these:

RED
I am not learning how to fight here, I am learning how to learn, and how to defend. If I am ever forced to defend myself, I will defend to win.

Red/Black

I know that what someone says does not make it so. I will not let words, good or bad, dictate my actions because I have nothing to prove to anyone. If I am descended upon, I merely have to move or go around the aggression. If they block my way, I have no choice but to go through it.

Hmm, Defense not aggression, and turning away from insults rather than reacting in violence, and avoiding confrontation unless there is no other choice, and when there is no other choice “defend to win”.

Doesn’t sound too different than Col Coopers Principals of Personal Defense. Also to as an anti-rights advocate “I know that what someone says does not make it so.” Takes on an extra level of irony, given that most of the “Support” for anti-rights principals is often based on their say-so and that alone.

So to tie it in, when anti-rights people use deadly weapons and skills for self-defense or for fun it’s just for fun, while if people use GUNS specifically (Remember, “Guns are different because they are different!”) its dangerous and violent, and they are future murderers.

Also note that Jason was doing all he could to push the CSGV “outing” article, but got upset when people discovered he was using both his real name and his screen name as a sockpuppet.

You see Freedom Loving people have standards which is good, anti-freedom people have DOUBLE standards which must be TWICE as good, right?

In closing, be careful with that thing Jason, its dangerous, and I hope you lock it up when you get home, lest the kids hurt themselves! Oh and swords aren’t any more dangerous than kitchen knives…you lock those up too, right?

    Wow. Zing!

Of course, there will be a(n) (il)logical explanation for everything……

  2. Bob S. says:

I seem to remembers something about people posing with lethal weapons a while back.

We need to fight this deadly nonsense. Christmas is about understanding and peace, not about arming ourselves and our paranoia

    and

@ Green: I’m no minister, but from what I’ve read of the New Testament, Jesus was about forgiveness and not retribution, and self-sacrifice instead of defense

    http://newtrajectory.blogspot.com/2011/12/holidays-are-about-peace-and-goodwill.html

I wonder how “Baldr Odinson” squares that with the self defense philosophy of martial arts school his “alter ego” is attending.

  3. North says:

“you can’t accidentally beat yourself to death.”

    I remember my teen years.

  4. Bubblehead Les says:

Okay, Jason Bladir OdinKilgoreson or what ever he’s calling himself says we all need to carry Swords and Practice Martial Arts. Fine.

Tell it to Breda’s Mom, or my Mom, or anyone over the Age of 70 that a Katana and a Fly Back Kick is better than what Col. Colt developed.

By the way, is he now going to recommend that all Snipers be armed with a Crossbow?

For God’s Sake, we use Firearms so that we DON’T have to use Hand-to-Hand Techniques and Swords and Staffs, etc. against a Lethal Force Attack.

This idiot better watch Indiana Jones One and see how Sword vs. Gun works out. What an Idiot!

    • Weerd Beard says:

Given that Mr. Kilgore is short in stature and doughy in muscle tone I’d imagine your average gang “soldier” who hasn’t even finished growing yet could best him in a handy fasion with a Louisville Slugger.

Now take the two of them together and put them up against my gimpy buddy Les, and I’ll blog the story as a DGU! 8)

  5. Pyrotek85 says:

Never has the irony been more palpable. Not that I wouldn’t carry a sword if I could mind you, I would because swords are awesome. It’s just… damn I don’t know what to say lol

I’d love to hear how swords are less dangerous than guns. I’d rather take a shot from a pistol than a slash from a sword if I was forced to choose.

Not that I agree with it, but he’s also way more likely to get crucified by a prosecutor if he ever used a sword in self defense, since it would look more ‘brutal’.

    • Weerd Beard says:

I’m betting his swords are all “practice” blades (which are still dangerous, but not made to hold an edge or survive stress like a true live-steel blade) which are “just for fun” (kinda like Joan Peterson’s Husband’s hunting guns) which is totally better than our guns that we have to, I dunno, protect human life.

I’ll also bet my lunch money that Jason doesn’t lock up his swords or his kitchen knives!

“guns are different because they are different!”

      • Pyrotek85 says:

If it’s a real, but dulled, practice sword, it’s not so bad. The cheap stainless steel/pot metal wall hangers can be dangerous to swing around because they can shatter or fly out of the handle since it’s not a full tang. Of course I wouldn’t have a problem with him having a real sword, but I bet he’d have something to say about us having them.

I’d like to get a katana at some point, you can get good ones for $300ish.

        • Weerd Beard says:

Even the spring-steel blades with rounded edges can be fatal when slashed, and even a rounded point takes surprisingly little to produce a fatally deep stab wound.

Practice swords are like .22 pistols and rifles. No they’re not as dangerous as their centerfire cousins, but if they aren’t handled with respect they are just as deadly.

  6. Training with weapons to defend himself.

He’s either paranoid, compensating for some short falling below the waist, or quite possibly both.

  7. Greg Camp says:

I’m choking on the hypocrisy of this person. He uses the name of a Norse god, despite the well-known martial attitude of the Aesir, and he claims to study the arts of fighting, but he comes off as a pacifist on his blog.

Now, how many killings do you run across that involve knives? You could do a whole blog on that topic alone.

Sometimes, the calmest response that I can come up with is to froth at the mouth. . .

  8. LWJ says:

This is kind of funny, especially since Saturday night I was reworking on a script where a guy hears anti-gun arguments from a friend, and he then reapplies them to the martial arts.

  9. Joe Mama says:

Oh look, Jason is posing like a proud little majorette! Ten bucks says he runs like a scared little girl at the first sign of trouble.

  10. MAJ Mike says:

Hmmm, after reading all of this I guess I’m just a heavily-armed pacifist.

    • Weerd Beard says:

I like to describe my philosophy as “Non-violent Anti-pacifist” as I abhor violence and generally feel it’s a poor tool for resolving most problems. Just violence is the only tool for resolving certain problems, and those problems are common, and in those instances pacifists like Kilgore are a leech on society.

      • Cargosquid says:

As I like to tell my fellow churchgoers, who seem to be MUCH more godly than I and more peaceloving…..

“It’s true, violence doesn’t solve problems. PROPERLY APPLIED violence solves problems.”

        • Weerd Beard says:

Everybody is pro-gun. Just free people pick their own gun and carry and train with it. Those who hate freedom carry telephones so they can call a total stranger with a gun to come and protect them.

          • Cargosquid says:

I will say this about the church that my wife takes me to….(notice how I said that?) they aren’t anti-gun. Kinda of neutral. Its not one of their agendas.

          • Weerd Beard says:

“Not one of their agendas” is a good way to keep guns.

Remember antis frame arguments as “NRA Wants everybody to be armed all the time!” because its a closer to their agenda of disarming everybody but police, military, and private security.

If you don’t want to carry a gun….or hell if you got up this morning and decided the gun belt was too heavy for today and decided to go unarmed.

I really don’t care. I don’t choose to live my life that way, but I support your rights to be unarmed. Freedom of Choice, if you will!

Meanwhile the antis are anti-choice and anti-freedom. If you don’t like guns, good, you can’t buy or own them. If you do like guns “QUICK! GET HIM!!! OFF WITH HIS HEAD!!!”.

Starbucks has been handling the issue the same way as your Church. They don’t care about guns, because they care about coffee, confections, and free wi-fi!

  11. Linoge says:

In fairness, having taken kung fu myself, I can personally attest that the “swords” that particular martial arts uses for competition and demonstration purposes are not weapons – they are scant more than rigid tin foil specifically designed to be flexible to give you that last bit of flick, snap, and pop at the end of your full extension.

If you were to actually swing it against anything more substantial than silk, the “blade” would lose. Hands down.

That said, Jason there is still practicing to cause greivous bodily harm and probably death to another person – after all, he is taking and demonstrating a MARTIAL art – and he is taking pride in the knowledge and execution of the same.

“Hypocrite” is far too… gentle… of a term to adequately describe scum like him who would deprive law-abiding citizens of their chosen means of defending themselves and entertaining themselves recrationally while taking such self-centered pride in his chosen method.

(And on a personal note, I wonder how long Jason has been taking kung fu – in two months alone, and only really learning/doing my Tán Tuǐ forms, I managed to lose 10 pounds. That spare tire of his seems to be going… nowhere, though.)

    • Pyrotek85 says:

That sounds a bit like a katana from what I’ve heard (sharp but pretty fragile, not like in movies where they’re like lightsabers lol)

      • Weerd Beard says:

Well a proper Katana is VERY strong…just not when improperly used. You block a strike with the edge of your sword you might be the proud owner of the world’s ugliest Wakizashi, but overall the master-built katana had a flexible and strong spine, with a hardened edge that was razor sharp.

Interesting about the practice swords, Linoge. All my experience with training swords has been from Western arts or Japanese arts, and those practice swords you can pick them up by the blade without too much risk….but if you fall on the sword, or slash somebody with it they WILL not yield to flesh.

All the peices I’ve seen and own are made of forged spring steel which isn’t ideal for fighting but is strong enough that it won’t shatter and cause injury if you accidentally hit something with the blade while practicing.

        • Linoge says:

Honestly, it entirely depends on where his instructor purchased the swords and what kinds of swords they are. Judging from nothing more than the pictures, it is probably some type of wushu sword, in which case it is comprised of “thin chrome steel” and is “blunt and flexible”. And, by “flexible”, they typically mean “can bend almost all the way back on itself.

If you were ever involved in a stage production involving thunder, think of those big sheets of metal the stagehands shook to create it. Same basic idea.

I would not exactly want to get whacked by one, but if I were, that would be the end of its life expectancy.

Now, the european fencing sabres I used when I was younger… those I still remember the pain from, and probably might have a scar or two still running around from them. That steel was flexible and hard, and designed to clash against similar steel for hours on end.

          • Roadkill says:

I’ve fenced saber and foil. A practice fencing saber, properly applied could cause enormous harm someone who is unprotected. It would not take a lot to kill someone with one. The flex makes it something of a semi-ridged metal whip. Also, plenty of people have died from when fencing weapons broke and the users didn’t realize it quickly enough.

Most swords were not meant to take direct edge hits. Swords broke all the time. Everywhere. No culture has ever had an indestructible sword. Blades just got reground into short swords and knives.

On topic: a lot of people who train heavily in martial arts do so for their ego. It greatly abuses that ego to know that a 70 year old woman with a bad knee and maybe a dozen hours training time can totally take down someone with 10 years of steady martial arts training and physical conditioning with a single .38 Special +P Gold Dot.

          • Weerd Beard says:

A Chemistry professor once said that the “Magic Sword” stories that many cultures share is likely based on the discovery of proper heat-treating and carbon addition to iron in imprecise conditions. Most sword iron was brittle, but some blacksmiths got the mix JUST RIGHT and suddenly a sword so strong that it seemed magical appeared. When the smith attempted to replecate the masterpeice he couldn’t because it was more luck than skill….

Dunno if it’s true but it smells right.

    • Cargosquid says:

I know appearances can be deceiving, but I know Aikidokas that look more aggressive and dangerous than he does.

  12. Daniel in Brookline says:

“Guns are different because they are different!”

Yes, but that’s the point. Guns are supposed to be different. They’re the tool that a seventy-year-old grandmother in a wheelchair can use to scare away a 300-pound behemoth. Anyone can learn to operate a gun effectively, and no one can run faster than a bullet. That’s the point.

“Guns are scary, and we shouldn’t have them!”

See above. If we replaced guns with something capable of doing what they do, the antis would want to ban them too.

Personally, I think antis are simply afraid of living in a society in which the next-door neighbor could be packing… meaning that they’re now dependent on his good will. The criminal with the gun can be ignored, until he’s in front of you. The neighbor, on the other hand, is both harder to ignore… and, at least theoretically, amenable to persuasion, which the criminal isn’t. So if we disarm the law-abiding, at least we’re doing something about the problem, right?

(No. That would be like saying “Government is too big, so let’s eliminate one of the three branches of government”.)

    respectfully,
    Daniel in Brookline

  13. Archer says:

Ah, Dave’s Tae-Kwon-Do. “You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.” Long story, but I have studied with them, and if you’re in this area, there are much better options.

But, down to business. He’s overlooking the glaring fact that when he chooses to learn the sword, he’s choosing a tool designed and built expressly to be a weapon. Historically, spears were originally for hunting big game. Axes were for chopping wood. Bo-staffs were for carrying water and helping the elderly to walk. Nunchaku could have been sourced from many places (no one’s really sure anymore). Knives are tools that have and will have a million uses. But swords were and are weapons … ummm … “with no legitimate sporting/hunting purpose.” (couldn’t resist 😉 )

If he’s using a “form” or “practice” sword, that’s the martial arts equivalent to a child’s toy gun, and the antis are not known for liking those, either. If he’s not, then he’s swinging a real weapon that he did not have to pass a NICS check to get, did not have to register with the authorities (they usually don’t even have serial numbers), and is arguably more dangerous in the wrong hands. Guns can be unloaded. Swords can’t.

The hypocrisy makes my head hurt.

  17. DirtCrashr says:

I maybe could do more damage with my Foil or Saber in Fencing if Linoge is correct – but unless he’s practicing at beating it into a plowshare, his sword and the study thereof is the science of War-making. It’s not a hunting implement except for hunting people.

  18. Jake says:

Oh my goodness gracious!! Swords are sooo dangerous! I’m going to start a movement to ban all swords…I mean we can’t have such dangerous things floating around! I’m absolutely terrified now and will live in fear for the rest of life that when I walk into a starbucks someone will be there with a sword and I won’t be able to defend myse…oh wait..I’ll have my trusty Springfield .45 sidearm…nevermind..I’m good.

  19. Gerald says:

With the Norse alias, sword-play, and collection of all white outfits, I am so willing to bet Jason Kilgore aka “Baldr Odinson” is a LARPer. Perhaps a 5th Degree Magus.

  20. Pakkinpoppa says:

I’ve got a Cold Steel Cutlass, a 1909 Argentine Navy Short Sword, and a 1917 Remington Bayonet, and I’d rather not be on the wrong end of either. Unlike a pocket or even a fixed knife, you add between a foot or more to your reach, and it’s sharp and pointy. Inside 21 feet, knives are pretty darn scary, so a sword, even more so.

To be fair, a machete has accounted for a whole lot of folks unfortunate enough to not have an alternate method of force, and it’s basically a cheap sword designed for agricultural use…

Ban Assault Blades! No highly serrated or double edges, no points, no cheap “Saturday Night Special” blades or small, easily concealed models, they need to be big enough to be visible but not so big to be dangerous, figure a 12 or 14″ handle with a 1″ blade, that would be fine, but no carrying it in public without a permit, and it still must be registered…

  21. DirtCrashr says:

What’s he need a sword for? Nobody needs a sword in this day and age, or is his big sword compensating for his tiny penis?
