Edge of my Seat Listening

Wow, I’m listening to this Podcast were Mas Ayoob is interviewing the Police officers who were involved in the Exotic Animal incident in Ohio.

Both Mas and the Officers are being very factual an professional, and doing all they can to keep from embellishing the story beyond the raw facts, and even this dry account is AMAZINGLY exciting and interesting.

Rural Ohio Police officers being pitted up against some of the most dangerous and difficult game animals on the planet as the sun was setting. They earned their pay that night.

Give it a listen!

PS: Also listening to this makes me VERY glad to have an FAL as my go-to gun. Not only is .308 an awesome cartridge for two-legged predators, but a few trigger pulls will do a Lion or Tiger well if that ever comes up.

I have that episode burned to disc and in queue for commute listening. I’m looking forward to it. Some of my favorite Pro Arms episodes are those that have Mas conducting interviews.

One of my buddies is a Reserve Cop down in that County, and from what he tells me, the Powers-That-Be knew this was an Incident waiting to happen. But the Exotic Animals Laws in Ohio are so weak and screwy, AND the Farmers Lobby is so powerful, that anything that might have been on the Books to remove those Critters to a better place like the Columbus Zoo wouldn’t work. After all, if they could seize the Animals from this guy, what’s to prevent a “Kill the Jews” group like PETA from saying Hogs, Chickens, Dairy Cows, etc. might not also be seized due to their being “Abused?” Or so the Lobby argues.

Bottom Line, though, is that the Dead Asshole could have made a Phone call to the Columbus Zoo, and have them in Good Homes. But since he was had already served Jail Time because he was “Special,” and didn’t have to obey Gun Laws, he caused the Tragedy to happen, not the LEO’s. Sad.

My HK91 is my “go to” gun. The .308/7.62mm NATO round has excellent penetration. I’ve used it to take white-tailed deer here in South Texas and have no doubts as to its ability to drop human animals as well. While the 5.56mm would certainly drop me, a full size cartridge is something to consider.

Not a fan of the Control Layout, or the fluted chamber of the CETME rifle, but I do think that 7.62x51mm (in both NATO and Winchester) is about the best balance of power and size in a cartridge.

Also Jeff Cooper was in love with it because it was small enough for infantry rifles against hostile enemies that were still small and light enough for your average man to lug around, but it was big enough that you could put animals like Grizzly Bear and Bull Moose, as well as all but the biggest African big game onto the ground humanly.

And heck, there were trophy hunters who would drop African Elephants with .303 Enfields, there’s nothing to say that a skilled marksman and hunter couldn’t do the same with a 180gr .308.

      That’s a lot of latitude in a battle-rifle!
