Godwin’s Law is the Refuge of Cowards

Sure internet discussions can always degrade to just mindless arguing, but I’m not a fan of “Godwin’s Law”, as the Nazi Police state is a great example of the break down of humanity in the name of Utopian Tyranny.

McThag makes a great argument. Those who call “Godwin” would be ignoring an amazing warning from history.

Go read it.

  1. Firehand says:

I thought Godwin’s Law was simply “A discussion of ‘X’ goes on long enough, the probability of someone bringing up Hitler/Nazis approaches 1”; that doesn’t mean the comparison won’t be valid

    • Weerd Beard says:

You’re right. I should maybe edit the post a little , but online I often see Godwin being invoked by somebody looking to abort a discussion for any reason.

    • McThag says:

The corollary is that once Hitler has been invoked, the conversation is over and it’s all poo-slinging from there.

My rebuttal with a couple of antis in the past has been, “Hitler and Stalin used this as an early step towards their mass murders. Without this step what they did would have been nearly impossible. While it was not the only thing they did to grease the way, why take the chance?”

  2. Bubblehead Les says:

So does this mean I can’t call an Anti-Gunner who wants to Disarm me and leave me vulnerable to the “Jews in the Attic Test” a Paranoid Nazi Thug?

HAH! Godwin Fulfilled in 3 Comments! ; )

My work here is done. Next!

  3. It bugs the hell out of me, too.

“Never forget! But if you mention it, the conversation is over and we’ll all assume you’re wrong!”
