“Gun Death” Knockout King

Several people sent me this story, but Bubblehead Les was the first.

Matthew Quain still struggles to piece together what happened after a trip to the grocery store nearly turned deadly. He remembers a group of loitering young people, a dimly lit street — then nothing. The next thing he knew he was waking up with blood pouring out of his head.

The 51-year-old pizza kitchen worker’s surreal experience happened just before midnight earlier this year, when he became another victim of what is generally known as “Knockout King” or simply “Knock Out,” a so-called game of unprovoked violence that targets random victims.

Now I’ve heard of this game being used for Gang initiations, and I know there were at least two deaths in my home town of Portland, Maine in about the last 15 years, and I’ve covered this in the “Gun Death?” Files before. Still this is the first I’ve heard of it being a game of “Sport”.

First, let’s point out that this “game” is frequently fatal, but also uses nothing but the attacker’s fists. Also the victim is chosen based only on how oblivious they are to the “Game”. Condition white can very much be fatal. Always be aware of who’s around you and their behavior. Street thugs are generally not trained actors so there is almost always a “Tell” no matter how hard they try to conceal it.

Be careful out there.

Michael Bane covered this last week in The Best Defense. They played out this exact scenario and showed a couple of ways of dealing with it. First I had heard of it, too.
