Morning

So begins day three of the surgury course.

Amusing things learned:

-Our instructor (who has a noticeable accent) taught us the “French Canadian Method” of cardiac puncture. Yeah, I’ll need to mess around with that some.

-My surgery skills have grown very rusty from the times when I did these things much more often, but rust polishes away quite quickly…unfortunately not quickly enough before we move to more advanced techniques.

-Vascular surgery in a mouse is work for watchmakers. I can do it, but man it’ll take me some work on that, and I think I’ll be using more of my time for these methods then the others that will be presented.

-Boy I should have been smart and cut that gorgeous steak I had for dinner in half, rather than gorging myself like I did. Rarely do you get meat cooked perfectly from food services!

-Said steak lead to freakish nightmares of mouse innards under high magnification, and then no further sleep from an upset stomach.

Thankfully we’ll only be in class until noon today, then we’ll be touring the park. I suspect the sleep I got will wear off quickly.

Hope y’all are well too!

Actually, just think of it this way. If you can sew up Mice Veins, then you can do CERTAIN Gun Shot/Knife/ Other Stabby Thing Wounds, right? So make you sure have everything for Field Surgery in your Blow Out Kit, okay?

  2. Ed Skinner says:

I do “no beef” for dinner these days after discovering the steak/nightmare link. Bird flesh seems OK. Not sure about pig. In all cases, less is better for sleep. Gettin’ older, I guess.

  3. Greg Camp says:

In the Aubrey/Maturin novels of Patrick O’Brien, Dr. Maturin was called on to carve the meat. He was both a surgeon and a naturalist, after all. Of course, a good steak doesn’t require a lot of fancy cutting.

Would it be too far out of the way on your return trip to stop in Phoenix and excise a cyst for me?

A microscope will not be required, and I’ll supply the bayonet.

A needle, pressure, and some antiseptic ointment is all you need!

Kinda’ rough as a “do-it-yourself” when it’s in the middle of your back and the size of a ping pong ball.

Thanks for the advice though. If I suddenly become more limber, or grow another arm in a more lumbar-friendly location, I’ll give it a go.

Three arms…now there’s a thought. 1 rifle and 1 pistol, 1 shotgun and 1 pistol, or 3 pistols…always having your 180 covered. On the other hand, buying shirts would become problematic. It’s always something.

Having had the same “eat meat/bad dream” issue several times, I did some research, and some experimentation.

I found a reference (sorry, but I forget where) that digesting protein requires water. If the gut contains insufficient water, the process either strips water from the body, leading to de-hydration, or stops, leading to discomfort. Either way – bad dreams and poor sleep ensue.

The solution was to make sure to drink plenty of water before bed. I may be full of it – pun intended – but it works for me. If I have a protein-heavy meal, I drink lots of water (not alcohol, or sodas – plain water) and sleep like normal.

    • Weerd Beard says:

That sounds very reasonable. I think also very reasonable is that I don’t eat like a pig!

Also its a bit of a catch 22, as protien does require lots of water for digestion, but drinking too much water leads to midnight peeing. Also lots of digestion leads to urine production ….and midnight peeing.

I solved the issue last night by having a light supper and going to bed early!
