Review CZ-82

Right now the CZ-82 is one of the best pistol buys right now, and one of the best C&R gun buy right now.

Not only are they cool surplus guns to collect, but they are perfectly suitable for modern carry and defensive use.

They’re such great guns, CZ still makes and sells them today, as the CZ-83 which is the civilian variant in .380 Auto (and earlier models in .32 ACP).

Also given that both the Makarov and the CZ-82 are heavily patterned off of the Walther PP, you’ll find that while many gun makers won’t specifically say “CZ-82” or “CZ-83” in their Holster Roster, they very well may have a Makarov, or Walther PP in there, or a Walther PPK holster with an open mouth to accommodate the extra barrel length.

Of course like any surplus gun, while they’re making ’83s today, they aren’t making any more 82s, so the supplies are limited!

I love mine. It’s my most commonly used carry gun. I prefer the Hornady self defense ammunition for it. What do you use?

    • Weerd Beard says:

I don’t carry mine. Its kind of “neither fish nor fowl” in my gun lineup. It weighs as much as my 1911 commander, and weighs a lot more than my various pocket guns.

I just prefer a .45, but there ain’t nothing wrong with with 12+1 of 9x18mm. And I’ve certainly recommended the Hornady loads, as they seem to be the best quality 9×18 JHPs on the market.

  2. AZRon says:

Somewhat off topic, but the Makarov was my first exposure to a de-cocking safety many years ago. I found it very disconcerting to watch the hammer fall on a loaded chamber.

    I’ve gotten over it.

    I got 2. They’re great guns.

As a bonus for any southpaws they’ve got ambi safeties. Though given the size of the safties I prefer to carry mine in condition 2.

But I’m in the same boat as Weerd. Mine’s in between my 1911 and my Kahr in carry size so it is rarely carried.

Though OWB, “skeleton” holsters like the ones from Galeco for the 1911 also work great for the CZ82. Especially those where the retention strap is for hammer down.

I gave an 83 to my partner as her first carry gun when she got her license, and every time I see it, I want to sneak it back into my drawer. The thing has one of the smoothest and lightest double-action pulls I’ve ever run into, and I’ve pulled the trigger on a Colt Python. Leave it to the Czechs to make a great gun.
