Joan Peterson Fisk

Joan hasn’t been putting out anything useful as of late, but this post is in rare form:

Efforts to arm and train teachers can only result in a new market for guns. If the ludicrous idea to arm teachers went anywhere, teachers would go out and buy guns. And, if they are to actually have them in the classroom, they will have to be trained of course. So off they go to the gun permit training classes. Unless of course, you live in Virginia, where you can get a permit with just a one hour on-line training class with no requirements to handle a gun or know anything about a gun. Oh yes, and you can get a Virginia permit easily even if you live in another state. Or in Arizona where not even a permit is required to carry a loaded gun in public. Same in Vermont, Alaska and Wyoming. So that would mean that teachers can carry these weapons with nary a moment of training in how to use a lethal weapon. Raise your hand if you think that’s a good idea. Gun deaths in these states? You can check out this report from the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence for much more information about gun laws in the states and why they actually matter.

Love the old “You need training” meme. She notes that four states now have done away with their permit entirely, many more states have no training requirement, and even more have training so minimal I doubt people retain much of it a week after the class.

Yet where are the massive spike in gun accidents, negligent shootings, or people improperly justifying lethal force in these states? Oh and note her “justification” comes from the Joyce Foundations’ AstroTurf group.

When Wayne LaPierre’s CEO picked former Congressman Asa Hutchinson to shepherd his ideas about arming teachers through the media, he knew what he was doing. Hutchinson has ties to some private security companies.

Remember, conflict of interest ONLY exists from the opposition. Joan gets her primary paychecks from the Joyce Foundation for her work at Protect Minnesota, and she constantly references the Joyce Foundation as “justification” for her outlandish and false claims. Yet somebody with ties with a training groups can’t be trusted. LOL!

Hmmmm. The hypocrisy is stunning. But if you don’t like this idea, then, how about the absolutely nutty decision by the country’s craziest Sheriff, Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona. He has ordered armed posse members to patrol the perimiter of schools in his county:

Why is this nutty? Have there been mass shootings in Arizona? Has there been negligence on behalf of the patrols? Do the students even know they’re there, as they wear no uniforms, and are issued no equipment? Seems like saving money is “Nutty” to Joan.

“And then there was Jacob Cutler. According to a Flagstaff police report, Cutler threw his girlfriend to the ground and choked her while trying to sexually assault her in 2008. When she didn’t cooperate, he allegedly threatened to call police and said they would side with him, because he “has a badge.” He was a member of Arpaio’s posse at the time.”

This isn’t anything unique to the Arizona group, you see crap like this in police forces all the time. Of course Joan is just after THIS group because she can site two bad members, not Police in general, which she gives carte balance to posses not only, civilian guns (and carry them EVERYWHERE) but full-auto and other NFA weapons. Further, Joan has been very vocal against the Indiana law that allows civilians to use deadly force against violent criminals committing crimes…EVEN IF THEY HAVE A BADGE!

And let’s hope that one or more people in the state of Indiana won’t decide to blow a police officer away and do so legally. Really? Indeed. It’s a new law. One can shoot a police officer now in Indiana and do so legally:

Hubbard, a 17-year veteran of the Police Department in Jeffersonville, Ind., says his apprehension stems from a state law approved this year that allows residents to use deadly force in response to the “unlawful intrusion” by a “public servant” to protect themselves and others, or their property.

Lovely double-standard there Joan!

Never mind. These are the folks that the NRA is offering up to protect our children from the “bad guys” with guns. These are the “good guys with guns” that we should trust to take care of school security. Good grief. But that is the twisted logic of the NRA and it’s leaders and lobbyists. The decision of the NRA to let Wayne LaPierre have a press event with no questions asked where he suggested that the solution to gun violence is more guns was a mistake. Since that time, many NRA members have gone public with their distaste and disenchantment with the organization. Public polling is not going their way.

Joan again is citing that bogus MAIG Poll. Not only does MAIG also take money from the Joyce Foundation, but this bogus poll seems to be the next iteration of the bogus Arthur Kellerman study saying that guns in the home are more likely to do bad things than good. It isn’t true, but they’ll keep citing it so the lazy and uninformed will believe it, and vote accordingly. Hopefully with the internet, and social groups this won’t work THIS TIME, as it has in the past.

This being the case, how can the NRA sit at the table of discussion with any real intent to stop shootings when the organization’s ties to the gun industry benefit from shootings and the sale of weapons after each mass shooting? How can it be that an industry that makes weapons designed to kill people and particularly assault rifles designed to be used by the military to kill as many people as possible benefit from the death of 20 small children? It’s beyond belief really and beyond what is acceptable and within the bounds of common sense and common decency.

Again comes the carte blanche to the police. Cops carry pistols with magazines holding 12-17 rounds depending on department issue, and most patrol officers have “Patrol Rifles” which of course is just a less evil way of calling rifles “Assault Weapons” because cops have them. Are cops roving hit squads? Are they state-funded executioners? Joan will say its so they aren’t outgunned by criminals (who aren’t using rifles, “Assault” or otherwise”. Still in situations like the North Hollywood shootout, this is when Police stand down and wait for the SWAT team, which is more of a military arm than a police force, will armored vehicles, machine guns, body armor, air support, and grenade launchers. Sorry, Joan, cops carry guns for the EXACT same reason as I do, to defend themselves and others from criminals. The only difference between cops and citizens is the citizens are the ones in danger and CALLING THE COPS. Thanks I’ll keep my guns, I might need them.

More lies. The NRA is misrepresenting the majority of its’ members who want reasonable gun laws. If the leaders of the organization can look the families of shooting victims in the eye and explain to them why universal background checks on all gun sales is a bad idea, let’s hear it. If they can look Gabrielle Giffords in the eye and tell her why a ban on high capacity magazines is a bad idea, let them speak up.

Again, her idea of “misrepresentation of membership” is an anti-gun poll with very questionable methods, and when it comes to looking Gabrielle Giffords in the eye…well they can’t…because when she was in the public eye and available for discussion she wasn’t anti-gun. Now that she has retired from politics and not giving meetings with the public, she’s talking of gun bans. All of this said in Joan’s blog with heavily moderated comments. Joan we WANT to discuss the issue with you…you won’t let us. You want an echo chamber and a non-debate.

Lastly she talks a bit about James Yeager and his permit:

Yup. Thank you Tennessee Department of Safety. This guy means business. Just listen to his ridiculous and paranoid words in the video. He is spouting the NRA’s drivel and fear mongering and worse. The thing is, people like this have guns and lots of them. They are insurrectionists ready to commit treason. Now that the country may actually pass some reasonable gun reforms, these guys are dissembling. Really, dear readers, don’t believe a word he is saying. No one is going to come and confiscate his guns. No one is taking away any God given rights. No one is setting the Constitution on fire. People like this are the problem in this country.

Umm, Joan, Tennessee was being a chicken shit on this issue. James Yeager STILL has lots of guns, and can STILL carry and use them (just not with a legal permit anymore). If he DOES mean business, then nothing has changed, as murder is more illegal than carrying without a permit.

Again the anti-gun logic of “If guns were as illegal as murder, nobody would be murdered with guns”. This logic only makes sense to them.

Now throughout this post she talks about the “paranoia” of gun owners about confiscations. She sums it up best in the comment section:

Where did you see that anyone on the gun control side want to confiscate guns and get rid of the second amendment. That is a lie and you seem to believe. More’s the pity, Mark. There are very few comments on the side of reasonable gun control that come close to matching the gun rights extremists. I have experienced those so I know very well what they say. We’ve been over this before. Try as you might, you just can’t defend what is being said on your side of this discussion. It should be embarrassing to you and reprehensible to any person with integrity but I guess not. I am not going back and forth with you any more about this, Mark. If I were you, I wouldn’t defend what is being said by your side of this discussion. Where have you experienced it on this blog? Stop now, Mark before you say some things that make you look bad.

Chris in Alaska gives some good citations of people on Joan’s side that are VERY happy with the idea of confiscation.

He missed one key person. JOAN PETERSON!

I guess your definition of confiscation is different than mine. From the article you linked:” More than 160,000 handguns have been surrendered by their owners since new laws were introduced following the Dunblane massacre, the UK Government has revealed.”

Confiscate- ” To seize (private property) for the public treasury.
2. To seize by or as if by authority. See Synonyms at appropriate.
adj. (knf-skt, kn-fskt)
1. Seized by a government; appropriated.
2. Having lost property through confiscation.”

Gun owners in UK were compensated for their guns turned in though it took longer than they expected.

Joan, you are OPENLY coming for our guns, and you are such a coward that you’ll pretend you aren’t, and then send total strangers to do your dirty work. Why do you think Joan is so upset by the Indiana law against shooting Cops engaging in criminal acts? That would REALLY make the door-to-door confiscations sticky, wouldn’t it?

Where do I sign up? Because otherwise, all she is is a photogenic victim to be paraded about in an attempt to shut down the debate. If Giffords, or Joan, or anybody else, can’t bear to listen to the simple fact that a: mass shooting victims are statistical anomalies, and b: victims of shootings with assault weapons are statistical anomalies, then they seriously need to grow some thicker skin.

She mistakenly thinks any of us are ashamed for her getting shot. Guess what? I didn’t do it, I didn’t even know the guy (though the people who did know him knew he was crazy) so I’m not going to feel any shame or responsibility for what happened. She can take her collective guilt and shove it.

      • Weerd Beard says:

Or that any of us are HAPPY that this happened. The only people to express any positive interest in this is Larry Pratt of GOA (Clip can be found here), and that’s more because they’re an extremist Republican apologist group pretending to be a gun rights group.

I think it sucks she got shot. I ALSO think it sucks that for all the crap Laughner was arrested for, and got spoken to by the police they couldn’t find it in their hearts to CHARGE him with ANYTHING.

Hey but that has NOTHING to do with the death and destruction that day, does it?

        • Rob Crawford says:

As tragic as it was that Gifford was shot, I think it’s much more tragic for the families that had people murdered by that lunatic, and even more tragic that the tyrant-wannabes are using it to punish the innocent.

I also called her out on ‘registration’, but am having trouble finding that comment…My google-fu is failing me.

She is the poster child for cognitive dissonance, she cannot reconcile conflicting things
like good cops and bad cops and criminals or honest citizens.
She believes, facts have no truth to her unless it’s part of her faith.
She is the picture I use for denial, the person doesn’t kill, only guns can.
She is the shill for the brady bunch, a pathological bunch if there ever was one.
She runs a blog that is biased, and does not believe in the say of other save agreement.

Seriously those are all true. She is also in favor of gun confiscation, she wrote that a while back. However, her husbands rifles are apparently off limits, hypocrite as well.
I think its because he’s not allowed to take them out and the wood counteracts all evil.
Ok that last was snark, maybe.

As to the buyback bull excrement… both were done as multiple round where the first round got par value, later ones less and then it was give them up, now, or else. The bottom line is its turn them in or else. I think the boys had to say back in Concord and Lexington would likely be repeated on that. Of course the Tories will as its peace at all costs.

The fact is many were surrendered likely those that were “registered”, many more were unregistered and hidden or “misplaced” and still exist. The thinking of their (Oz and EU) is that less than 30% were turned in and millions are still out there is both civilian (now officially criminals) and know criminal hands.

As to G. Gifford, I fear she is being used and her opinions are not permitted or spoken.
Or if they are her handlers are keeping on the low profile. She is the victim of a deranged individual who attempted to assassinate her. I do not fell its fair or correct to criminalize everyone for that one person action. If we go down that path then we are all criminals and only remain free pending prosecution. Novels and stories have been written about how that dystopia works.

Me I’m all for reasonable gun control. First take all those 20,000 plus rules, laws ,
and contradictions, put them on the table as negotiable, all of them. Then were
save a starting point for rational law. However the base law remains, the Constitution
and the founding amendments. All those laws have to reconcile against that and provable public good. The end result would be easier to comply with and the criminals will still be criminals.

You missed something in her lame attack on Arpaio:

According to a Flagstaff police report, Cutler threw his girlfriend to the ground and choked her while trying to sexually assault her in 2008. When she didn’t cooperate, he allegedly threatened to call police and said they would side with him, because he “has a badge.”

In direct opposition to the point Joan thought she was making, the thug wasn’t protected by his badge — he was arrested.

  6. Will says:

IIRC, the Giffords shooter was using the high cap (31 rnd) Glock mags, and a little old lady took his mag away from him as he attempted to swap mags. It’s quite possible Giffords is alive due to the shooter using these extra long mags. Lot of leverage there, which is why he couldn’t hold onto it when she grabbed it. That’s why he was swarmed, instead of being shot by the ccw guy that ran up to the scene.

    • Weerd Beard says:

To be fair, the facts aren’t out on ANY of the recent cases. All we can deal with is eyewitness accounts and news media reports. We do know he had a long Glock mag, and a Glock 9mm of some sort. We don’t know HOW MANY of them he had.

This is another fair point to make. People are using these cases for political leverage, but the official police reports have not been made public. People speak a LOT about the Movie Theater shooting in Colorado there was a 100 round drum mag, but there are conflicting reports if that magazine was confiscated in the theater, or in his car, unused. Certainly there is an aerial photo of his AR-15 left outside the exit, with a 30 round magazine seated.
