LOVE this song!
I was looking through youtube for a live performance that is as good as this Studio recording, and frankly most of them are terrible, either because Kris’ heart wasn’t in the performance, or maybe his issues with substance abuse. Still its hard to argue that he’s one of the greatest songwriters in American history.
And here’s another on of his gems!
I think you’re too young to remember but there was some controversy over Johnny Cash doing this song on TV. I don’t remember now if it was his show or not. But the network was very concerned that Johnny would sing the lyrics as written and say “stoned”. Johnny wouldn’t say what he planned to do but when the time came he sang it as written. I’m sure several network execs had heart attacks, but Kris says he was watching to see what he’d do and was very pleased that he did what he did.
Definitely too young, and I hadn’t heard of that one. I think everybody is aware of Jim Morrison singing “Higher” in “Light My Fire” on the Ed Sullivan show, but I hadn’t heard of this one. But yes it was the Johnny Cash Show.
