Colion Noir on Gun Free Zones

This is just an amazing video:

The analogy to cheat codes in video games is really appropriate. That’s what “Gun Free Zone” signs do. Hell just look at this recent shooting. Kennesaw Georgia, the town that had an albeit tongue-in-cheek mandatory gun law requiring all residents to own at least one gun. I say “tongue-in-cheek” because the law was never enforced, and it obvious political posturing. Still the law met little criticism from the town residents, and is still on the books, likely because most people there DO own at least one gun, and I’m sure carry is very prevalent.

The antis seem to find that a mass shooting there was a sign of the dangers of guns and the need for more gun control. Except the shooting was at a posted “Gun Free Zone”. While Georgia doesn’t have binding signage laws making people disobeying these signs criminals, it IS company policy and likely people who carry there will be subject to termination.

This is the policy of my workplace. I can carry there 100% legally, and would never face criminal charges if my firearm was discovered, or I needed to draw my weapon in self defense. Still for this, I would be fired on the spot. Now maybe if I worked an entry level position this wouldn’t be an issue, but a high-skill professional job, trying to cover that termination might be very tricky…so despite the risks, I don’t carry to, from, or during work. It sucks, but it’s my employer’s right to make any demands they want.

So yeah, in a town where every home was armed, and one could suspect any crowded area would have several people carrying concealed, does it surprise you that a mass shooting happened in a posted “Gun Free Zone” in a business location that does not serve the public (the warehouse is in an industrial park by the airport, it is not a Fed Ex retail store)?

Now another law I’m intimately familiar with is the “No Discharge of Firearm” law, as most places I’ve lived. One interesting example was of a former employer of mine. They were the owners of this island and my job was to be general staff on the ferry boats, kitchen staff, and assist with tours of the fort. The island was a nesting site for seagulls, also pigeons nested in the fort. This caused damage to the historic landmark, and the owners were granted exemptions from hunting and protection laws to kill all the birds nesting in or around the fort. Of course the island is part of the city of Portland, which has a no discharge of firearms. Despite the island being about a half-mile from shore, city officials ordered him to stop shooting birds with his shotgun.

Now all of this is interesting, but if ever he needed to defend his life on the island, or his home on the mainland, he would NOT be prosecuted, as justifiable self defense is exempted in all the laws I’ve read.

Yep, gun free zones are just bad law!
