Images of the Antis: Free Money!

“Progressives” don’t seem to understand economics at all:

Yep, if every minimum wage worker got paid $20 an hour they’d have a LOT more money. Only they never think WHY people pay low wages. No skills, no work history, no references, why should they get paid more.

Also what about people who make ABOVE the current minimum wage, but below whatever pie-in-the-sky pipe dream the “Progressives” dream up. They’re going to need raises too! Same goes for the people who suddenly are only working a few dollars more above minimum but have a long good work history and marketable skills.

Where does this money come from? The “Progressives” always seem to hate on CEOs and people making good money. Cut their pay! But it’s not like a CEO just sits in their corner office and counts money while eating caviar and browsing exotic cars on auction sights. They work DAMN hard, and have a lot of pressure in their jobs. Pay them less, and they’ll take their marketable skills elsewhere, or possibly they’re decide that it’s time to execute their retirement plans earlier than planned.

Where does the money REALLY come from? Layoffs! What happens when a person is laid off? They need to collect unemployment and food stamps.

Good job guys!

Really the solution to a low minimum wage comes from working hard, and being proactive in your job hunt! Work hard and you’ll get a raise. If your company doesn’t want to pay you for the skills you bring to the table…find somebody who does!

Say you live in a small town that only has a few job opportunities, and none of them appreciate your skills….MOVE!

You think I LIKE living in Massachusetts? No, but I can make good money here, and so can my wife. When I have lost my job in the past I quickly find new prospects easily! That’s why I live here.

    I’ll go one further.

Look at the historical buying power of one hour’s worth of minimum wage. Notice that it buys just about the same basket of goods except for a very brief time after it is raised?

What the people on the bottom end of the pay scale need is some deflation not a raise that makes the inflation nailing them already to get worse.

Taking an asshole tack, we’d save even more with leaving minimum wage alone, repealing welfare and enacting a “work or starve” program. Min-wage plus $1 for our new border security force that suddenly has a HUGE pool of hungry people to man it! (and I know a dozen reasons why that wouldn’t work, it’s a joke).

If the “Progressive” dream of a $15-20 dollar minimum wage comes to pass, I’ll be PISSED!!!

    Why?

Because right now I’m making the equivalent of $21-23 per hour (salaried; the hourly equivalent varies based on how many working days are in a month). To land this job, I had to work up 5 years of consistent experience (at $11-15 per hour), PLUS spend a few years’ worth of sleepless nights (and a year’s salary) earning a Bachelor’s degree, AND develop solid interviewing skills.

Needless to say, I’ve earned this. I’ve worked my @$$ off to get to where I am.

And the “Progressives” want to pay MY hard-earned wage/salary to any schmo who shows up!

    GAH!!!

    *headdesk* (ow!)

Why can’t there be jobs for kids who live with mom and dad? Or college students who want to earn some beer money? Why do they insist that every job must be something that some slacker can decide to do for the rest of their lives and support a family with?

Because we dare not imply that some people are “worth” less than others by paying them lower wages. It simply isn’t “fair”, and is most likely “racist” or “misogynistic”. What they produce is wholly irrelevant.

      • McThag says:

Never mind that some people are worth less, and worthless and life is so very rarely actually fair…

I’m probably a racist misogynist for saying it.

Take a look at some colleges, which, at their worst, are a blend of people’s republic, Mafia, and aristocratic privilege on the crack pipe. Minimum-wage students mowing lawns, TAing courses, doing primary teaching of some undergrad survey courses, covering for drunken, no-show administrators, while full profs, who abandoned learning when they got their teaching chops down, use tenure improperly to reward friends and punish enemies.

If you’re wondering why the quality of anti-gunners’ rhetoric is so friggin’ awful, think: 50-year old, bored, embittered prof who wants to dabble in politics in a way that suits his collectivist, elitist mind-set, and make some easy Potomac/Beltway money to boot.

I read one article, where one of the McDonald’s workers was protesting for a minimum of $15/hour, crying that she was earning about the same as she did when she was first hired as a cashier.

      Ten years ago.

Look, I got hired at McDonald’s. I was 16, and the interview consisted of basically, “You do drugs? You gonna show up?”.

Five weeks later, I had had two raises. A week after that, the manager from a competing restaurant in the same mall offered me an additional $0.50/hour (in 1986) to come to work for him, with easier duties. Based solely on how he saw me hustling and still taking care to get the trash into the giant compactor out back.

If you are not mentally disabled and you’ve been punching buttons or flipping burgers at Mickey D’s for ten years, I have zero sympathy for you. You’re getting paid all you deserve. (I have significantly more sympathy for someone trying to support a family who got laid off from a real job, and has been working at McDonald’s for a short time because that’s all that was hiring at the time. But paying lazy, unmotivated workers more money just further hurts the hardworking single mom trying to keep the rent paid until she can find a decent job elsewhere.)
