More Failures of Gun Control

Interesting story:

uthorities said Tuesday they busted clandestine AR-15 semi-automatic rifle assembly operations on two farms in western Mexico, believed to be the first known example of such weapons being put together in the country.

The investigation found that at least some of the AR-15 parts were being produced on the farms, while other pieces apparently were brought in from the United States.

…Najera said investigators believe the operation supplied arms to buyers in the state of Michoacan and also to the local Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

…Authorities seized equipment that Najera described as “highly sophisticated machinery” designed to ensure the weapons function properly.

I’m guessing they were buying all the non-gun parts in the US and milling the receivers in their shop. Still if it’s illegal to make the guns there, why are they bothering making ARs, and not M16s?

This goes double when you realize that still the #1 supplier to the cartels in Mexico is the Mexican Military, as it still has a high desertion rate, and they don’t leave naked.

If they were acquiring firing control group parts in the US as the story suggests, semi is much easier to come by than full awesome.

If they were making those parts, then you’re right on. Why not make m16s instead?

still if they were making receivers, why not make them to accept lighting links?

I doubt they were that educated, so your assessment is probably correct.

It’s EASY to get jigs that will help drill semi receivers. Likewise easy to get semi trigger groups. No one will even wonder at someone ordering a dozen semi trigger sets, frankly. A dozen full auto sets? A little sketchy and likely to get reported to ATF as “odd”, unless the governent PO came in with a LEA cover letter explaining how you’re the department armorer.

Likewise, getting the jigs correct for the autosear hole is easy to screw up. And still requires you to have Go faster trigger guts. Same-o, same-o for a DIAS, which omits the need for an autosear hole or seperate autosear, but requires the rest of the FCG be full auto. And a DIAS can be a bitch to properly tune for a particular gun.

Lightning Link is slightly easier than a DIAS, but still may need finicky tuning to ensure it is timed right for that gun.

Most receiver but not all will accept lightning links, but they can take some effort to fit and require a no-longer-common bolt carrier. A M16 carrier can be milled to accept a lightning link (but be no longer M16 compatable) – and that will result in a full auto ONLY configuration. A link can be made to work in semi and full, but it requires bastardization of a complete M16 burst fire control group. It would be a thousand times easier just to drop in the M16 fire control group, than monkey with it so it will work with a link.

Drop in auto sears have a similar-ish situation. They only will work with the M16 configuration bolt carrier, and a complete M16 fire control group. Literally the only difference would be the drop in sear in it’s housing vs a GI type sear pinned into the lower.

Machining receivers from barstock, however, it’s roughly an additional 20 seconds to just make one to accept the GI-type auto sear and pivot pin. Doesn’t make a lot of sense as to why someone would make illicit rifles semi-only – unless you want your customers to only have “so much” firepower ? Or wanted to spin these rifles are just like the “ghost guns” being made in the US?

Sounds like you answered the question above. If they had a line on civilian AR15 parts and were not skilled armorers, they probably just bought a CNC machine, and went all script-kiddie to make it turn bar stock, or blanks into AR receivers, and then watched youtube videos until they got them to work.

Or, saddly, more likely, they could be being paid by US.gov to turn 80% lowers and parts kits into working guns so that Obama can attempt to push another ban.
