One of My Favorite Movie Trivia Bits!

The Tom Selleck pick as Indiana Jones (Also Danny DeVito was slated to play Sallah rather than John Rhys-Davies)

Still they missed my favorite: Ronald Regan as Rick Blane in Casablanca! Had Dutch done as well as Bogey did (and Really, as a short, bald, and craggy dude who was until then known to play only toughs rather than romantic leads, I suspect the studios all thought this was a better casting) He probably would have just continued to act rather than bother with Politics.

Good Stuff!

How did I not know this about one of my all time favorite movies.
Ronnie would have been a terrible Rick.

I dunno about that. Now I’m a HUGE Bogart fan, and Casablanca is one of my favorite Bogart movies after The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep, but I’m also a huge Chandler and Hammett Fan. Still while some of the listed casting options are HORRIBLE, many are just DIFFERENT. They wouldn’t necessarily make a WORSE movie, just a DIFFERENT one.

Bogart had a rougher look and style than Regan, so Bogart definitely played the part of Rick Blane the former arms dealer and freedom fighter, and illegal gambling house proprietor better than how Regan would have (but then again, just like how people didn’t know how Bogart would play a romantic lead, we don’t know how well Regan would have played an anti-hero) but Regan would have played the romantic part better than Bogart.

Extrapolating on what we can’t possibly know, I suspect Casablanca would have been a less dark film. Since I like the dark aspects of it, I probably wouldn’t like it as well, still its an awesome story.

Still I also REALLY like Bogey in Sabrina which is nothing more than a gooey romantic comedy. So we’ll never know.

I certainly think that something like Raiders of the Lost Arc with Selleck and DeVito would be DIFFERENT but just as good. Both Selleck and Ford both excel at action and comedy, I don’t think DeVito could have done such a good job, but Sallah’s part was relatively small, and he could have taken it many different ways (Hell when I heard Steve Zahn was going to play Al Geordino in Sahara I assumed he was misscast as Zahn is a smaller dude and Al in the books is a mountain of a Man. It turned out to be GREAT casting, just the character was more of a madcap and louder sidekick than the strong-and-silent one in the books), so I don’t think the movie would have been any worse. Also Ford has lost a LOT off his fastball in recent years, and maybe Selleck with his strong opinions and MASSIVE staying power might have made that horrible 4th movie better.

      It’s fun to think about.
