Hell, I Was THERE!

I watched the first episode of Dr. Who on Nexflix, and decided that I’d rather not watch any more. Not really my bag. But I do dig Chris Hardwick of the Nerdist, and also Jesse and I were up in the Balcony during the Boston Video.

Kinda cool! More relevant links here

The first episode of which Doctor? I would argue that the show changes tremendously depending on the man occupying the role…

Whatever the oldest ep of the newest season was.

It was shop Maniquins taking over London.

Hm. Christopher Eccleston. I might suggest skipping ahead to David Tennant with “The Parting of Ways” – while the character is, strictly speaking, the same, the various actors lend their own particular take on him, and this guy may be more suited to you.

The new one, however… he is something else entirely.

Christopher Eccleston was good, but his Doctor was a bit… angsty – though that did fit with the backstory. David Tennant was excellent; more energetic and upbeat, and he moved away from the angst (though it started to come back in his last season or two).

Matt Smith seems very promising. I think his best episode so far is “The Big Bang”, where he shows his range of acting ability. Towards the end, you can really see the old man that the Doctor really is underneath all the energy, neuroses, etc., and it’s all sheer acting ability.

The seasons after the first are the best of the new series, but there are some good ones in the first season that are worth watching, too. “The Empty Child” and “The Doctor Dances” are good, and “Bad Wolf” and “The Parting of the Ways” are the episodes that bring in David Tennant.

It gets better after Rose is gone, too.

Thanks for the breakdown, I may give it another go. For the time being I’m watching Babylon 5 for my full-on Netflix Sci-Fi g33k-out

I have all 5 seasons on DVD. It was an awesome show.

Just remember that the rushed feeling of season 4, and the lower overall story quality of season 5, were the network’s fault because they left the 5th season renewal up in the air. This forced JMS to resolve major plot points and storylines in season 4 that were meant for season 5, and then left him without much left in the way of prepared storylines when they did renew it for the 5th season.
