I Love Being a Home Owner

I love having a yard. I Love enjoying my yard.

I hate doing yard work. That was my day off today. At least the weather was nice!

Gonna go chill out now. Later!

Then do what I do. Leave the yard alone and hire a goat twice a year!

Seriously, one of my neighbors raises goats and rents them out for yard duty as a side business.

I feel your pain. I have a love/hate relationship with yard work and our yard.

Love the decades old oak trees and pine tree in the yard.
Hate the 15 contractor grade yard and lawn size trash bags of leaves — the 2nd time we raked leaves.

I seriously understand why people pay for lawn service. As soon as the kids are out of the house and we can afford it — I’m hiring someone.

One of the big things I love about my yard is the old swimming pool. This place had an old above-ground pool. Not interested in caring for the pool (not to mention it was over 10 years old and showing its age quite well) nor interested in the safety and liability issues (guns just take a few simple steps to make sure they aren’t a direct danger…a full swimming pool is just plain old dangerous, and open to ANYBODY who’s willing to walk on my property)

So I hacked the fucker up with an axe and had it hauled off. now I was left with a 3′ deep pit. Been filling it with readily biodegradable yard wastes. I still have close to a foot to go before its level, and intend on heaping it up so it’ll compact down. Then I’ll cover it with soil and plant grass.

Until then I don’t need to worry about putting out yard waste bags!

I have a nice foot-high crop of dandelions going, which wouldn’t be an issue except that my lawnmower won’t cut anything that tall – it just pushes them down under the blades. Hopefully, the crabgrass and dandelion killer I sprayed the yard with yesterday will take care of the problem.

Which leads to another joy of home-ownership: I found out yesterday that my outside faucet cracked during the winter. Fortunately, it cracked on the outside end of the valve, and only leaks when I turn it on. One more thing to fix.

If you haven’t tried it, Roundup is pretty awesome stuff. Its adsorbed through the foliage, so it won’t poison the soil or any seeds or bulbs. This does mean it will kill any grass that gets splashed.

I assume since you have such a high crop, you don’t really much care if your lawn looks like the 9th Green. Just nuke, let them turn white, then rake them with a leaf rake, then toss a fistfull of seed in the hole and water.

Hopefully the grass roots will choke out future encroachment.

Oh and you can always just thin the tops down with a weed whacker.
