“Out of Touch”

From Joan, of the Brady Campaign, Joyce Foundation, and the Million Mom March.

No I don’t carry a sleeping bag in my car. No I have never been stranded on a road at night. I try not to be driving out in places away from traffic late at night. That is how I suppose I have survived as long as I have. I really don’t know anyone who carries a sleeping bag in their car. Band aids and first aid kit, yes. It’s a wonder I’m still alive isn’t it???

How about that “I try not to be driving out in places away from traffic late at night” bit. This is the standard issue “Let them Eat Cake” idea of the anti-freedom crowd. THEY live in all-white gated communities of affluent limousine liberals, so they don’t need guns. Those poor single Moms living in a high-rise in an inner city with a next door neighbor whose prime vocation is “Slinging Crack Rock”, well she should just move out to the Hamptons, where things are much safer!

I have thankfully never been stranded, but I’ve come close a few times. I don’t carry a sleeping bag, but I do have a TON of blankets in the back of my truck (mostly used to protect goods from bouncing around, or if I need something to lay down if I need to crawl under my truck….but they can be used for insulation. I also have a mylar space blanket that rolls up really small, and those bastards will get you SWEATING, especially if you close yourself off in the passenger compartment of your vehicle. I don’t have food or water, but that’s only because I don’t offroad, so in all the places I might get stuck I shouldn’t be more than 48 hours alone, and for that I can do without food, and in New England water isn’t really scarce.

But note the matter-of-fact nature of her statement. In the blog she claims that somebody with a gun and a first-aid kit was “Planning something big”….I also have a first aid kit in my truck too….and a gun. I’m planning on going to work….is that big?

Also Joan’s never seen anybody stranded? Hasn’t seen anybody, or will never HELP anybody who’s stranded.

Frankly that’s wise if you’re a meek old liberal who doesn’t carry a gun….

“I’m planning on going to work….is that big?”

    To a liberal?

Why yes. Yes it is. If you were really using your common sense, you’d live off your trust fund.

    • Weerd Beard says:

      LOL!

Stupid me, I blew my trust fund on college so I wouldn’t have any loans! I could be making welfare babies RIGHT NOW!

Great comment dude, thanks for the LOL!

“I try not to be driving out in places away from traffic late at night.”

So she’s never gotten lost in a seedy area at night? Lucky her. Of course bad shit happens in the middle of the day too.

  3. bluesun says:

So… because I routinely drove on dirt roads in Montana in the winter (at night, no less), and so had a sleeping bag and a few supplies, I’m a paranoid survivalist freak?

    • Axess Denyd says:

If you fight back against the cold with a blanket, you’ll only raise the stakes and escalate the cycle of seasons. Now winter knows that it must start off colder and the unblanketed civilians will suffer. Are you TRYING to start another ice age?

  4. Jennifer says:

Wow! I must be quite scary to her then. I’ve got a gun, a first aid kit, a blanket, water, and food in my car. And a Bible too! (There’s tequila in my purse too. You know, for sanitary reasons.)

  5. Bubblehead Les says:

I wonder why she carries a spare tire, because with her Mutant Psychic Super Powers, she must KNOW that SHE will never have to get a Flat, right?

Guess SHE would have never gotten stuck on the “Highway of Death” during Hurricane Rita, correct?

Or one of those Pesky Tornados will show up as SHE drives to Work, right?

Or that some Terrorist would have the AUDACITY to fly a Jet into HER Building, and SHE would have to walk home in High Heels, if SHE survived, correct?

Who does SHE thinks SHE is, Nancy Pelosi or Hillary Clinton?

  6. I should inventory my car and make a post to be forwarded to her.

Does the child-size life-vest mean I plan to throw a toddler in the drink? Or do the fishing poles mean I plan to use them as a bobber? It can only be one of the two, you know.

    • Weerd Beard says:

“Does the child-size life-vest mean I plan to throw a toddler in the drink?”

Well that IS fun! (true story, my little cousin grew up on a lake and that was one of the games he enjoyed!)

“fishing poles mean I plan to use them as a bobber?”

How well do they chum??? 😉

  7. “in New England water isn’t really scarce.”

Do you pack an empty container? Also depending on where you are, I wouldn’t assume that the water is guaranteed to be potable. Of the stuff in my GHB, the bottled water is what I use the most. I’ve had a couple people at church develop low-blood pressure from mild dehydration. A bottle of water will generally fix them right up.

    • Weerd Beard says:

I may take some added steps. I do have containers that can be used to haul water, and yeah I know drinking from ponds and streams is a last ditch.

Again I rarely travel off the beaten path where I could expect to go more than a day without contact with others (and rarely out of cell range where I can yelp for help), so I suspect that food and water would be low on out list. Warmth, protection, and first aid is MUCH higher.

  8. Bob S. says:

When I was a Scoutmaster (and various other leadership positions in the troop); we would routinely travel with an entire 6′ by 16′ trailer of supplies
Tents, Cordage, First Aid, Axes and Saws, food, etc.

There were more than a few campouts where we conducted Rifle and Shotgun merit badge training.

If one guy was “planning something big”; I wonder how she would describe an entire troop of Scouts and Scouters 🙂

And firearms weren’t the only weapons our Scouts trained with

  9. Nomen Nescio says:

i can’t really understand these morons’ mindset. as if refusing to plan or prepare would work some hex to keep bad circumstances away; it’s magical thinking.

i’ve never been stranded on an empty road in the middle of night either, but i know it can happen even if i do fail to prepare for it. i HAVE had my transmission seize up solid on me with no warning, on an empty country road that might not’ve been the middle of nowhere, but certainly on the outskirts of nowhere. i had cellphone reception, which was good, for else i would’ve had a long unpleasant walk. the tow truck got there before nightfall, which is why that episode doesn’t count.

i try not to drive very far in wintertime, but if i do, damn straight i put some spare blankets in the trunk. i don’t even live off the beaten track, but blankets are cheap, and freezing is no fun. i have been known to pack sleeping bags on occasion, but mine are too big to keep in the trunk regularly, they don’t pack down small enough.

food in the car? not normally, no. but if i know i’m going on a road trip that’ll take more than a couple hours of driving, yeah, i throw some snacks and some bottled water in there. lots cheaper than living off convenience stores and fast food restaurants along the way, and i can eat whenever i want so long as i can pull off the road. easy to put in a little extra just in case, and only smart. if i leave my home town in earnest, the first hour, hour and a half of driving will be through woodlands on empty roads, no matter which direction i go. nor will there be cellphone reception, and i know this. why would i do that and not carry food along?

i don’t keep a gun in there, ever, but that’s because i never go anywhere one would be very useful. i probably SHOULD keep an axe or something in the trunk, though, or a single-shot 12gauge, just in case i hit a deer and need to dispatch it; that DOES happen where i live, often enough that i might in fact be negligent for not preparing for it. like most, i don’t like to ponder deer collisions, they’re expensive and messy.

and on that note, time to check the pressure in the spare tire. i haven’t had a flat in years… doesn’t mean it can’t or won’t happen.

(i have a cousin who worked in Houston when Rita was coming in. he made it inland with his entire family in good order; said he avoided the interstate system like the plague, drove on the smaller roads and had no trouble. one thing i DO always have in the car, good road maps.)

  10. Braden Lynch says:

I know it’s not very Christian, but if the SHTF and she showed up on my doorstep asking for water, food, shelter, and the protection of my firearm from maruaders, I know that my family comes first, and I’d ask her to just move along. However, my decent elderly neighbors already have an invitation to come stay with us, lest you think I’m an ogre.

Again, she lives in a fantasy-land where big daddy government will always ride in on the rainbow farting unicorns to rescue her behind. Just ask the Katrina survivors how that all worked out so wonderfully.

First aid kits, fire extinguishers, flashlights, batteries, and firearms all make perfect sense. I don’t want to have to apologize to my wife and kids that I was irresponsible and did not prepare and they now have to suffer the dire consequences.

    • Weerd Beard says:

I’m not a Christian so I can’t speak for that, but I WILL say that people who keep tigers, lions, chimps or other dangerous wild animals for pets are stupid. You let a man-killing beast into your home and care for it, it might be gentle and even loving for a little while, but eventually its instincts will kick in and you’ll be in a world of trouble.

Letting a Joan Peterson in need into your home might seem like a merciful thing at the time, but its only so long before she becomes comfortable and turns on you.

A better analogy, Would it be wise for a Jew or a Black to allow a starving Klansman or Neo Nazi into their home for a meal?

Maybe in a fable that’s a good idea, life ain’t no fable!

      • Braden Lynch says:

I don’t think she is that type of person. She probably feels she is in the right. However, she is incredibly naive, misguided, and profoundly altered by her personal tragedy. So, I hope I could be a good enough person to help her if she was in such a bad hypothetical situation.

The problem is she learned the opposite and the inappropriate lesson from the bad things that happened and she champions these false solutions of gun control on the rest of us. This is despite the logical, reality-based, legal/Consitutional and moral arguments we provide that destroy her emotional drivel.

I wonder if she will ever be disabused of her erroneous views on gun control?

        • Weerd Beard says:

“I wonder if she will ever be disabused of her erroneous views on gun control?”

Generally its when somebody is younger and still working on their self image they get shamed out of making statements that are easily disproven, or totally false.

I think in this case you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, and she’ll be hating the self-sufficient until the day she dies.

  11. Linoge says:

Given that Joan lives in the Frozen North, I am frankly astonished that she would not plan for the potentiality that she might one day get trapped by the weather or stumble across someone who is so disabled. The gear I keep in my car (that needs to be upgraded sometime soon) is there for both me, and for the sake of anyone I might discover who needs it… not a charitable bone in that woman’s body, is there?

  13. Firehand says:

    Let’s see, in the truck there’s a
    air compressor
    axe
    tarp
    first-aid kit
    ‘get home’ pack
    tow strap
    tie-downs
and I plan on getting a GI shovel. And in winter I usually have a wool blanket in there too, just in case.
According to her standards I’m not only planning bad stuff, I carry the gear to bury the bodies, too.

She reminds me of a story at Kim du Toit’s old blog; guy at a party had someone’s wife say “If there’s a disaster, we’ll just come over to your place” and was flabbergasted- and then enraged- when he said “You won’t come through the door unless you’ve got stuff to contribute to the situation.” Bunch of the other women got just as pissed off, how DARE he say they couldn’t show up with their kids and have him take care of them?

  14. That Guy says:

Thanks for the reminders… I need to restock my trunk pack. Some of the water has been used, and the first aid supplies are getting old.

As an added bonus, it will freak out an anti!
