Strange Weather

Well man I’ve been having a hell of a time this weekend. Wally, Waldo, Sam, and myself all hit the range. Wally had finished all the work on my FAL and it functioned flawlessly. I’ll have to get some glamor shots up of it soon. We had a good time, but it was cold. We packed up and headed to the Buxton compound where we shot the breeze until dinner when a delightfully large gathering of people showed up and burgers and merriment were had.

Oh and it started snowing.

fairly hard.

The power went out during the night and I found myself taking an early morning bathroom stop by the light of my phone’s LED flash light.

When the gang had all woken up the power was still out. I noted that I could see Waldo’s breath…and I could see my own. Meanwhile Mrs. Weer’d was in Portland at her Mother’s house and she called and noted they had power. Waldo called his Dad and he had power, so we simply abandoned the house and parted ways.

Was about 5″ of snow in Buxton, looks closer to 2-3″ here in Portland. Should all melt by Wednesday.

Still amazing seeing green leaves covered in snow. Fall didn’t even stand a chance.

So yeah we’re having lunch at my Parent’s house then heading for home.

And in light of the snowfall, a song!

I’m jealous! My FAL is on its way back to DSA to find out if the lower was made from too soft aluminum.

I know they meant well, but there’s a reason that the lower is a steel part from FN (except for a very small number of para’s).

I like the concept of an Al lower on an FAL, do they have serious problems?

I know it seems that only DSA does that. There might be a reason for that.

      • McThag says:

While I grouse about it, there’s no real reason not to make the lower out of aluminum; if you use the right grade.

DSA spec’d out the right grade, but didn’t get it on a large run of lowers.

Basically if you’re going to be using aluminum for this part you need it to be perfect. Steel? Oh, use that stuff over there, it’ll do.

FN had bad feedback on their para’s with the aluminum lowers to the point where the weight savings wasn’t worth the issues fixing it. But that was the early sixties, we’ve learned a lot about aluminum since then and some grades which were “aircraft grade” then are now commonplace today. Even the AR is made from a different kind. Vintage is 6061-T6 modern is 7075-T6.

          Neat, thanks for the info.

I likely won’t be buying a DSA until I move to a NON-AWB state or the Mass AWB is repealed.

But I have me some SERIOUS gun lust for an 18″ SA58 Para

Strange weather, no question; glad you got the gun running right!

  5. Lissa says:

My folks have been without power since yesterday 🙁

Does this put the kibosh on gorgeous Fall in New England?
