I believe we are dealing with definition #4, which is the most common usage in Maine.

Cute as a button, both of them….cunning as a substitute for cute is definitely a New Englandism, I’ve never heard of it.
Yeah I was surprised to see it as a recognized definition in Websters too. Not even New England, I’ve ONLY heard it in Maine, anybody from away just looks at me funny if I say it.
Gotta say, I woulda looked at you funny and said “Huh??”
