TSA Blues

I gotta say I’m not a happy camper right now. I’m going down to Florida for a long weekend. I’m excited about warm weather, seeing family, and also getting a chance to meet with some bloggers.

What is really taking the wind out of my sails is GETTING THERE. I’m not looking forward to complying with the totally stupid firearm rules. (BTW does this mean I have to toss my ammo in an factory ammo box into a carry-on bag? I just assumed I’d lock it in the gun case, but this page says I can’t? Seriously what bullshit, and its not making me feel good.

Of course I haven’t flown since the perv patrol became the standard MO. I will not submit to the back-scatter machine, they accomplish nothing, and are for the comfort of the goons not me.

Sorry, this just isn’t my fucking America. Also how stupid is it that I carry on the highway, I carry on busses, I carry on trains, I carry in parks, I carry in bars, I carry at the movies, I carry at the store…all perfectly legal, and all with a very uninteresting body count (ZERO)…I can carry in the vast majority of the United States, I can carry in Massachusetts, and I can carry in Florida….but for me to get on an airplane with a .38 in my pocket I am suddenly terror on the high seas?

Grow the fuck up! *grumble*

If you got a comment, even a stupid one, toss it in. I want chatter.

Don’t put up with this unconstitutional garbage! Doing so only encourages them to push even farther beyond the boundaries of decency and legality. It’s all worthless security theater that does nothing to keep you “safe”. Boycott Flying ENTIRELY until sanity returns! A great point, and something I DO observe when I can. Jay, Dragon, and I will be driving to the NRA con this year, much like Jay and I did last year, and the wife is planning a trip to Colonial Williamsberg, and we’ll be driving that.

That being said we’re only spending a few days in Florida, when you consider the drive from Boston to Central Florida (especially when you note that my wife doesn’t drive), it just doesn’t work. Trust me I REALLY wish it did. Even crossing enemy territory as we’ll be doing driving to NRA, generally you’re fine putting the unloaded gun in a lockbox in the trunk, and you don’t need to worry much about how you store your ammo, or what kind of boxes or containers you use.

Its flying or don’t go. I like my family, so the 2nd option isn’t a great one.

Is rail an option? If so, that would probably be a more low stress option, anyway.

        • Weerd Beard says:

Probably not as there really isn’t a contiguous rail system up and down the east coast, the trains are notoriously slow and unreliable, as well as about the same comfort as a plane, and I always hear horror stories of lost luggage or wild portages between on train to the next.

          • Ian Argent says:

Rail is a great option, along the northeast corridor. Everywhere else, not so much. Plus, the rules to transport firearms on Amtrak are actually worse than those to transport via aircraft.

Whaaaaa! Weer’d’s gonna die from radiation exposure and there won’t be any more news on stupid crimes and laws!

When are you going to Colonial Williamburg? The last weekend of June is great — it’s “Under the Redcoat”, the British Occupations of Williamsburg, and we’ll be down there doing our 18th century thing.

  4. At least the goons at Logan are respectful, or as respectful as possible considering the circumstances. They put on fresh gloves and were brisk and businesslike. Problem is, I was being violated! In full view of everyone else who happened to be around the security and gate area at the time. Of course they offered me the option of going to a private screening room, but then I’d have had to leave all my stuff behind, and that I wasn’t about to do. Totally humiliating experience, but I certainly didn’t get the feeling that the gals were enjoying it, either. Just my two cents.

  5. Wally says:

The ammo by air rules are silly. Basically, cant have any ammo loose or possibly loose. Ammo in a factory box, or plastic box, is fine. Loaded mags in a mag carrier are fine. Loose mags, or loose ammo is not allowed.

Although this one time I had loaded mags in a closed mag pouch, they mauled my luggage enough to break the plastic baseplate – spewing ammo everywhere.

    Enjoy the vaca brother!!

  6. Wally says:

Yes, Yes you can. Or in speedloaders in a pouch, but not loose speedloaders or speed strips. – As long as you have less than 5lbs total of ammo and none of it exceeds 19mm. 10 gauge is juuust over the limit.

Turn your head and cough, Weer’d.

    😉

  8. Old NFO says:

As long as it’s in a box, it’s okay in checked luggage NOT in your carry on… And I’d tape the box shut just to be on the safe side. I spent two days chasing loose ammo around one suitcase after the baggage gorillas got their hands on it and popped a plastic ammo box open (one that I had a hellva time opening when I WANTED to open it)… sigh…

  9. DeadCenter56 says:

Good news is that Orlando doesn’t have full body scanners, at least not yet. So on the return trip you only have to roll the dice on getting sexually assaulted by hand instead of getting a ‘choice’ of being radiated or sexual assault…..

I can’t imagine what it’d take for us to fly commercial again.

We just drove around 2,000 to visit some folks. Left here on Saturday night. Got in to there Sunday morning. Hotel there Sunday night. Visited Monday and most of Tuesday. Drove out late Tuesday afternoon. A hotel stay and nice dinner on the way home. Got in Wednesday mid evening.

No sweating a felony. No groping or radiation. No making the news for sitting on a flightline for 18 hours with overflowing toilets running in the aisles. No berserk men of “Middle Eastern descent” to trigger a “level two emergency” stop and a TSA blue gloved rescreen. Just a nice drive through what passes for America these. Painless.

    Drive.

  11. Braden Lynch says:

I carefully manuevered my wife into choosing to drive to Arizona (with stops both ways at Disneyland) for our upcoming vacation. I put forward the cost argument for 4 airline tickets when the truth is the TSA. I’m pretty sure that I would put my boot up the heinie of the TSA agent who dares touch one of my young daughters. Just can’t take that risk.
Sigh, I still have to fly for work reasons once in a while.
