.22 Plinkster’s Ammo Choice

Interesting that he uses very affordable ammo for his AMAZING trick shots!

I generally just use the American Eagle red brick ammo because that’s the stuff that both works in all my guns, and my local shops carry it.

I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled for the Federal Champion stuff!

The stuff from CCI is the only thing I have found that works in my Ruger SR22 pistol. Its a little more expensive than most but it works, so thats what really matters….

This is the big reason why I bought my S&W617. Even at the amazing used price I got it for, it was almost twice as much as many entry-level semi-auto pistols.

Still at the time I bought it, the Walther P22 had just come out, and people were buying them in droves. In a forum discussion people were talking about what ammo works, and what doesn’t, and their individual results were all different. Some found CCI Mini-Mags as 100% reliable, while others only had luck with Federal.

This isn’t just Walther, but many .22 semi-autos. They can be finicky!

So I paid a bit more for a revolver which even ate up the ammo a friend found in his attic that were spotted with corrosion! 8)

I take it you like that S & W? I am thinking about a revolver as well, they seem easy to care for and as you stated, I suspect any ammo would go through it.

And I know its small, but I like the .22lr size. Is .22 mag much bigger or does it make a difference only if I step to .38 or bigger?

        • Weerd Beard says:

Don’t get a. 22 mag unless you have a damn good reason. .38 special is a great defensive and target round (and bonus if you’re launching. 38s out of a. 357 mag!

.22 LR is dirt cheap, and mild in recoil (but limited in ballistic energy), and my 617 .22 is one of my most favorite guns.

.22 WMR is a lot more round for reasonable money, but what are you gaining? I find small fast bullets to have limited versatility.

Thanks for the tips. Time to expand the arsenal and would like a rifle and a pistol for around $1,000….cheap easy to get ammo is always good as well.

    Cheers.

That’s a fairly reasonable budget for certain guns, and under-budget for others. What niche for each firearm are you looking to fill? .22s are fairly cheap and easy to get for well under that budget, and there are lots of inexpensive and VERY good pistols you can find for $300-$500 that are centerfire. Also bolt-action centerfire rifles can be had for very reasonable prices.

Once you start looking at semi-auto centerfire rifles with removable magazines, the price makes a serious jump.

I guess my reason is to have something around the house. I am not a hunter, and while I got my Virginia CCP, I don’t carry. Target shooting and some home protection I guess would be the main things, though I do firmly believe we are going to have some serious unrest in the near future as well…..

I do have a Remington 870 as well…thats full of those shells that split into 3 pieces when it hits meat….

Well maybe you should look into .22s right now. And definitely something small and easy to carry in a defensive caliber (generally defined as anything .380 ACP or greater), because you got the permit, you definitely should be using it, and using it every day you legally can!

Also if you have any interest in the AR-15, I’d look into the S&W M&P15-22. It has all the controls, and many exchangeable parts with an AR-15, but shoots cheaper ammo, and is very well priced. I’d say that shotgun will certainly serve all your needs for the time being for home defense or SHTF until you get more brass under your boots!

Thanks Weerd! You are very helpful. I have been looking at the S and W rifle. Will let you know when I get one.
