Golden Parachute

This is just great

One day after the House voted to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for failing to provide documents relating to the Fast and Furious gunwalking program, White House spokesperson Jay Carney said the criminal prosecution of the contempt charges will not move forward.

“The prosecution will not take place in this circumstance,” Carney said during a press gaggle aboard Air Force One en route to Colorado. He said the president’s assertion of executive privilege over the related documents makes the matter moot.

The contempt charge does not address the controversial Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Fast and Furious operation itself, which allowed more than 2,000 weapons to fall into the hands of suspected traffickers for Mexican drug cartels. Instead, it concerns subpoenaed documents the Justice Department is withholding from Congress that cover a period after the operation ended.

I’m not really surprised that the White House is protecting Holder. I suspect the documents in question lead directly to the Oval Office. I don’t know much about what options congress has, but I hope they can get SOMETHING like a special prosecutor that answers to them rather than the people trying to cover their collective asses.

Of course by the time that happens the documents in question will be destroyed, and possibly replaced with forgeries.

Still I suspect there is a LOT going on with this.

Those documents are long gone. Most likely have been gone for months.

Let’s see if the cowardly GOP has the intestinal fortitude to push this. Smart money’s on no.

Well, looking how long it takes for a Federal Prosecution to take place (just how long ago WAS the Ft.Hood Massacre?) I ain’t holding my breath , either.

    C’mon, Issa, don’t stop now!

    That’s about right.

You see, that was Nixon’s problem. He was too much of a quitter.

Gotta love that how Executive Privilege can protect any documents and halt any investigation.

I know! Take it up to SCOTUS!

Yeah I bet Tricky Dick is rolling in his grave knowing he could have probably served out the rest of his Presidency….of course the Media wanted Nixon’s blood…meanwhile today’s media has a thrill running up their leg from Barry O.

  5. Kristopher says:

The house does not need permission from the justice department to try Holder and jail him.

They have a jail cell under the house for people who find themselves in contempt of Congress. Hasn’t been occupied since 1934.

Boehner can convene the House into a trial and sentence holder to jail for contempt until he produces the documents, or until Obama pardons him.

  6. Bob S. says:

At the same time they are exerting Executive Privilege in Fast and Furious, they are trying to deny Executive Privilege in Texas’ Voter Id law.

Can you say bloody effin’ hypocrites?

  7. Daniel in Brookline says:

I’m not worried about the documents. In the Age of the Internet, nothing truly disappears. Somewhere, there’s a nervous-as-hell whistleblower with a thumb drive and a backup of the past few years’ worth of e-mails.

I’m not concerned with forgeries either. This is the administration that tried to forge a Presidential birth certificate… and botched it, with an amateurish job that a 10-year-old with a ruler and a magnifying glass can debunk.

“It’s no the crime, it’s the coverup”… and the President is clearly covering up something big. He’s going down.

No, the question I’m wondering about is: does Mitt Romney use food tasters? Failing that, what else might get used to kick him out of the race, thereby leaving the incumbent running essentially unopposed? (He’s done that before, more than once.)

  8. Cargosquid says:

Issa published one of the “sealed” emails in the Congressional record to give proof to the lies told by his co-chair who was depending upon being able to say that the emails didn’t have anything to do with F&F without proving it.

So, I think that this scandal is WORSE than Holder’s. The INVESTIGATOR is lying and siding with the accused.
