Normal People

I got to thinking about one thing that is absent in the mental behavior of the antis.

You, I, and most people we know, people I’ll be pejorative and call us “Normal People”, when discussing things always ask about results.

I heard two people in the office talking about a diet plan one of them was trying. “How is it going?” Person A, askes, Person B responds “Great! I’ve lost 3 pounds already and I’m enjoying the food options!”

A co-worker heard I was lifting weights to get into better shape (haven’t lost a pound, but I’m down 2″ on my waistline, I’ll call that a “success”) and was telling me that their health club has Kettlebells, and what a great workout they provide.

You’ll also hear warnings from people: “Don’t see that movie, it sucks!” or “Man the service at that restaurant is terrible!”, or “Man I’m on the 3rd transmission on that truck, and it only has 100,000 miles!”

The end result of things are VERY important. Heck in the Grab-and-Go post there was a whole side track of people discussing the Ruger LCR (BTW I love little discussions like this, as its a good way to spread knowledge).

Now look at the Antis. They get excited about success (thankfully something that hasn’t happened in a good while for them), and upset at failure, or success of people they don’t like.

But never once do they concern themselves with results. The Assault Weapons ban was designed to stop bad people from getting dangerous guns. You ever hear antis talk about it as a success story?

The antis often talk about registries, but never mention how ineffective they are. I can’t think of a single story that was stopped by Massachusetts gun registry, nor other states who also have registries, and of course Canada’s national registry does nothing.

Ballistic Fingerprinting .

Antis will talk about how safe Chicago or NYC, DC, or Boston are, thanks to their heavy restrictions on lawful gun control, but they won’t go walking through these cities after dark…at least not without their armed bodyguards.

They are neither rational, nor healthy people. Of course this is why they support gun control!

I often see it (and frame it as such in discussions) as a potentialities vs. actualities issue. Anti’s look at gun rights under the guise of all of the terrible, potentially bad things that they’re just sure will go wrong if more people have and carry guns. It’s just “common sense” they’ll say. Meanwhile pro-rights folks look at actualities. What has occurred in the past, what is currently occurring right now, etc. as a predictive indicator of reality-based potentialities

Oh, this one is EASY! Keep this in mind when dealing with Antis, Progressives, Treehuggers, etc. “The ACT is the RESULT.” Here’s how it works. Antis hate Guns. Antis get Laws Passed to Ban Guns (the ACT). Therefore, the RESULT is there will be NO Guns to Commit Crimes. “But Criminals still are using Guns to Commit Crimes,” you say. Not in the Antis Mind. They passed a Law, you see. If Criminals are using Guns, then they must be getting them from People who DON’T want to Obey their ACT. THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH THE ACT. It’s the PEOPLE who WON’T OBEY that’s the Problem. AND THAT’S YOU, because you won’t give up your Guns. If YOU would only OBEY their ACT, then everything would be fine.

Same Principle applies to the “Occupiers.” Their ACT is to sit in a Park and Annoy People until the World Economic System meets their Utopian Ideal. If you want them to go away, change the World into their Ideal, which is to sit in a Park and sing Kumbaya.

This also cover PETA, UN Resolutions “(But we had a Vote Condemning the Violence, what else do you want us to do?)”, Candlelight Vigils, etc. That’s how they roll.

It’s entirely possible that they are basing the expected success on the NFA registry.

Haven’t been many crimes with NFA registered guns. Like so close to none it’s statistically unlikely, even though it’s true.

Since registering THOSE guns worked; registering ALL guns will too!

Except NFA guns are a vanishingly small number of guns, the rarity makes them worth the probulation and expense. Then the owners are extra careful with them because of the scarcity.

Almost as if they NFA buyer is not a representational model for the public at large.

Kinda reminds me of the equality-of-opportunity vs. equality-of-results dichotomy. If we don’t get the results we want, we’ll make them come out that way, Procrustes-style.

Good observation, WB! And I think this ties into the idea that, for many/most anti-gun folk, this an emotional issue, not a rational one. (I do think that some antis are misguided and uneducated vis-a-vis guns.) As someone or other once said, you can’t use reason to change a person’s mind about an idea that reason didn’t put there in the first place.

I spent some time a while ago hanging out in a Unitarian group. Their ideas appealed to my libertarian streak, but I got tired of being invited to protests and consciousness raising activities. My question was always, what are we going to DO? That question wasn’t appreciated, though, since doing something requires getting up off your butt and actually doing.

The gun grabbers constantly go on about how we’d be safer without guns. This flies in the face of two facts: There are hundreds of millions of guns in this country, and we have long and porous borders.

As has been said, the goal is regulation for its own end. Put another way, the saying has it, “The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy.” Asking what will be accomplished embarrasses the regulator and is no longer allowed.
