Project Phoenix

Things are moving in the podcast world pertaining to Vicious Circle’s last episode.

The big question I’m having is how does somebody running Windows 7 record an MP3 off of a Skype call.

Bonus points if this software can be used to edit audio files. Alan did all of VC on a Mac, and I vowed back in the 90s that I’d never venture down that dark path ever again, and old grudges die hard.

Who has what I need?

  1. George says:

Windows movie maker, of all things, used to let you do that.

I’d volunteer to do the editing…I’m that big of a VC geek. ‘Course I’d do it on the mac… 🙂

  2. George says:

Sorry, Skype used to have MP3 plug ins. Movie Maker would let you edit MP3s.

  3. WallPhone says:

Audacity is the open-s0urce editing software used by most everybody else. Don’t know if it can capture from Skype.

  4. Wally says:

I have more hobo wine, you’ll need that.

  5. Becuase if you’re gonna drunk dial, record it for posterity. I think that’s the VC motto…

  6. bluesun says:

I can’t help you on the technical front, but I’d like to extend a heartfelt “Yay!” to you. And a laurel. And a hearty handshake. And now my random reference generator is broken…

  7. Check your email Weerd. I started working on this problem Saturday night but got derailed in my hosting change over.

We’ll chat in the IRC tonight.

  8. Riley says:

I wish I could offer my services, but I don’t know the 1st thing about recording or editing any of that stuff. I can offer to show up and talk. I always wanted to with VC but always was busy or said I try in a few weeks and now it’s a little late to try. I hope you can get something together if I can help shoot me a message.

  9. Gudis says:

    I second the Audacity recommendation.
    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
    Good luck.

  10. Tango says:

Audacity can indeed record a Skype call… if your driver supports it. It doesn’t record Skype truthfully… it records ANYTHING that your PC outputs through the sound card.

  11. Whitebread says:

I use this to record my Eve podcast. It’s trouble-free. http://voipcallrecording.com/MP3_Skype_Recorder

Then use Audacity to edit the audio files.

Email me if you have questions. It’s not hard.

  12. RedeemedBoyd says:

I’ll second Whitebread’s recommendation for strictly Skype recording, and third the Audacity recommendation for recording any sounds your PC is making. I also toss NCH Software’s WavePad sound editor in the mix, as it’s very straight forward to use. It’s not the best out there, but for my purposes it typically does the job.

  13. RedeemedBoyd says:

Also, if you need any help, please let me know. I’d love to get involved. I’ve been avidly listening to VC, even going so far as to download back episodes from long before I discovered it.

  14. ZerCool says:

I don’t know a damn thing about Skype or audacity, but I am so IN for the Angry Triangle.

  15. karrde says:

I’m not familiar with recording off of Skype, but I do occasionally run Audacity to record the line-in on a computer.

Audacity has a native format, and can output WAV or MP3 format. It’s pretty nice.

My friend (who set up that recording rig) also uses a tool called ‘Levelator’. It will, with minimal user input, bring up low-volume sounds and drop down high-volume sounds in a WAV file. Great for recording a single voice, I don’t know how well it will work with multiple voices running on a Skype call.

I don’t think Alan did that kind of thing to VC, though…and I don’t know if VC-reboot or Angry Triangle would need it.

  16. McThag says:

Wait, you USED to own a Mac?

How did you disable the implant that was supposed to keep you in the happy iFold?

You should buy another Mac. You should do it today. The Membership misses you. Return. Membership is bliss.

LOL My Dad bought a Mac LCII for the family computer back in the late 90s. It was the biggest piece of shit ever, and I can only imagine how bad it would be if we had software that would run on it!

Also when I started working in the research lab, my office computer was an eMac using OS X. hated it.

I also had a media box in my old Armory that Vector installed Ubuntu on it. Never got used to that OS either.

Meanwhile I took to Android and Palm OS like a duck to water The Mac Mobiles, not-so-much. I’m not infatuated with Windows, but it seems to always work the best for me…

      • McThag says:

For me OSX became preferable to Windows at the 10.4 level. I preferred XP over 10.3 by far.

10.5 and 10.6 are VASTLY better than Vista.

I’ve been reading the gap is very small with Win7. I intend to test this very soon when I delete my XP partition and install Win7 on my Mac Pro (early 2008).

My first Mac was a CRT iMac with the slot-loading DVD drive. That was running 10.3.9 and wasn’t great. It’s where I discovered that Macs were just computers, just with a different flavor to the OS.

I did the XP-Pro / Ubuntu dual boot on my home-built desktop with XP-Home on an old laptop for a while too.

My introduction to the REAL HIVE was with 10.4.3 on a 15″ MacBook Pro that I bought because I was so pissed at MS about the abomination that was Vista and wanting to have new hardware in a laptop. I took to it.

That lead to the same poor decision tree and the Mac Pro. With Bootcamp I kept my flight sims on XP-Pro.

I don’t think I will be “upgrading” to 10.7 since the exercise seems to be to make the computer more like an iPad. Like you, I didn’t take to the iPad but instantly thrived on Android (Moto Droid 2).

        • Weerd Beard says:

I’m right now using a Dell Box I got for Christmas running Win 7, and I friggin LOVE IT!

Got a few Vista Boxes lying about, and I really don’t see the big deal, but I also never personally used them for any heavy lifting.

  17. Teke says:

I’ve used audacity and it was fairly simple. But it does pick up all sounds sent to the sound card.

  18. Pamela (Skype plugin) will record the call. Audacity for editing.
