The Mechanics of Stupidity

One key feature of most people who are total idiots is despite all outward evidence they view their mental stature as “above average” at worst, and “exceptional” at the most. Chris Mathews is one of those people who really don’t have a lot of equipment in the ‘ol attic, but find themselves BLINDINGLY intelligent.

Hotair ties it all together with this quote.

This from a man who on October 2, 2008, shortly before that evening’s Vice Presidential debate, said of Palin:

“Is this [vice presidential debate] about her brain power?… Do you think cute will beat brains?…Do you think she’d do better on the questions on Jeopardy! or the interview they do during a half-time?…My suspicion is that she has the same lack of intellectual curiosity that the President of the United States has right now and that is scary!”

Then on January 12, 2010:

They find these empty vessels who know nothing about the world! Nothing about foreign policy! Who immediately begin to spout the neo-con line. I read her book — it’s full of that crap….It’s unbelievable how little this woman knows!…Don’t put her on Jeopardy!”

And again on November 2, 2010:

“Senator, do you think Sarah Palin is qualified to be President of the United States?…If she were on Jeopardy! right now and the topic was national government, American government generally defined, would she look like an imbecile, or would she look okay? Does she know anything?”

And finally on January 19, 2011:

“I’d like to see her on just a couple of episodes of Celebrity Jeopardy! or It’s Academic Mac McGarry to just see if she knows anything.”

Heh, that would hurt if he wasn’t so divorced from reality. He’s probably either patting himself on the back pointing out that those dumbed-down questions were “really hard ones”, or more likely telling himself he was the winner.

Never liked that guy……nice to see him look like an idiot!

I watched that match, and was struck by how uninformed our media lords and masters really are. Are these the products of Ivy League schools?

    • Rob Crawford says:

The problem is, they apparently believe that what they learned in their poorly-tended buildings is all they’ll ever need to know. They stopped learning. Someone once tried to tell me Barney Frank was brilliant because, 40+ years ago, an admissions officer gave him permission to attend a university with lots of green crap growing on their buildings. No mention of whether his behavior SINCE showed any intelligence…

    • Weerd Beard says:

Well there are some market mechanics when it comes to a college’s name-recognition. Ivy Leagues and other reputable private schools have a reputation of being the best-of-the-best, and a high price to boot.

Meanwhile there are so pressures not to have too many “Weeder” courses where huge percentages of the class will fail due to difficulty and selection of the most diligent students.

On the other hand Lesser-known state-schools often have a bad reputation as being “Cheap” and “Crappy”. So they push their students harder, and flunk-out the dead wood so they can get some quality Alumni.

Of course all of that is moot, I think. The brain is a muscle. Even if you’re smart when you get your political start, when you stop using your brain, you quickly devolve to the ranks of an idiot.

      • Scott says:

I think your final paragraph is spot on. Good point.

I work at a University and to be honest, we flunk so few people because we want their tuition. Its a non-profit college but if people don’t stay we have to spend more to recruit and in the end its a cost loser to not pass people…and these will be your future doctors, lawyers etc! I cannot tell you how many times I have given a C, yes a C and had the student complain and appeal the grade because they did an “A” amount of effort…..effort means bumpkiss. Its what you actually learned…

        Anyway sorry for the rant….
