Truth and Fiction

So Joe has it as his Quote of the Day.

Nothing like a bunch of beer guzzling, uneducated hillbillies playing with deadly weapons to prove just how ridiculous the 2nd amendment is.

Now I’ll note that Joe and Barron who are in that video are both educated Engineers, and are generally kind, and deep-thinking guys. Don’t know any of the other shooters, but it wouldn’t surprise me if most of them are educated white-collar professionals.

Last weekend the wife and I bellied up to a nice BBQ shack in New Hampshire and spent most of the night talking with the various local gunnies, gun bloggers, and lurkers (BTW Nathan, drop me an email or leave a comment, we need to get together again!). There were a LOT of Engineers, a bunch of nurses and EMTs, a large smattering of Scientists including the Wife and I who are Chemists, and Biologists respectively.

Borepatch remarked that he missed the bog meets since he moved down south, well we missed you too! I will note that Borepatch is some crazy super-genius who knows more about computer security than most, and spent a lot of his time plying his trade in three-letter government agencies that require securities clearances and don’t have much tolerance to “beer swilling Hillbillies”.

JD has a great rebuttal that hits it out of the park.

They tell me as a gun owner I am just a dumb redneck who doesn’t get it. I hold a Bachelors in Psych, and one in Electrical Engineering, I also hold a Master in Engineering Management. .. Yet they call me stupid for looking at the facts and seeing the truth, I am really missing it because of my lack of education. . ..

And to finish it off they tell me it is better that my own wife or daughter is better off at the mercy of some thug who wants to mug, possible rape, beat and kill her than for her to have the know how and tools to defend herself from the bad guy.

Sorry I don’t get it. How can any rational person give up their right to protect themselves and their family when our founders knew it was so important.

Go read the whole thing, its awesome, and I’m proud to call JD a friend, and to know his lovely family (or at least his wife and eldest daughter who are too cool for words).

The truth is, sticks and stones may break our bones, but names will never hurt us. But calling scientists, engineers, researchers, and software developers “a bunch of beer guzzling, uneducated hillbillies” really sends a LOT of insults at YOU rather than us.

So say what you will, we KNOW who we are, and we’re not ashamed!

  1. You guys are all over their FB page. Without you, I am not sure what they would have to talk about.

    Excellent response.

  2. maddmedic says:

So I am a medic and have been in EMS for 20 years.
    I am gunny.
I work with a number of Paramedics, Nurses, EMTs, Respiratory Therapists, Physical Therapists, and Physicians.
I am a gunny, as they are.
I have put myself in many situations to care for others and entered many incidents with nothing but my EMS bags and my trusty shears…I may or may not have had a knife clipped in my pocket, but basically trusting others for my safety and my own “gut feeling”.
    I am a gunny.
I have seen first hand the results of what people can do to each other! Not what the gun, the knife, the tire iron, handset from a rotary phone and assorted other “tools”.
They never did anything on their own, the tools, the inanimate objects.
The PERSON controlling them did so!!
So these so called smart anti gun/violence etc people?
Are not so damn smart in my book.
Pretty stupid to think an inanimate object can do anything on its own.
And to think we all have beer bellies and swill beer.
I have no beer belly and I prefer scotch or whiskey, neat.
    I am a gunny.

  3. PT says:

Don’t forget all of us doctors!

  4. North says:

I’ve slugged through about 500 Gun Blog Black List gun blogs. The people that write these blogs are certainly not uneducated people. There might be a few average IQ people in the bunch, but the majority are well above average.

There are some smart posts some bloggers make and the replies are from people that are pretty bright themselves. I’ve said to a few bloggers that their followers are some sharp people.

I’m an engineer. I’m tickled at how many engineers, scientists, and other professionals are gun bloggers. If all y’all were a bunch of rednecks, I would have wandered away long ago.

  6. George says:

Time to melt down Twitter. #iamagunnie

    Segue…preferred spelling…gunnie or gunny?

I go with gunnie, so as to prevent confusion with a Marine Gunnery Sergeant. I can’t claim to be one of those!

  7. Bachelors and Masters in Mechanical Engineering. Also don’t really drink beer, but do like the rare glass of scotch.

spent a lot of his time plying his trade in three-letter government agencies that require securities clearances and don’t have much tolerance to “beer swilling Hillbillies”

You’d think, but I’ve worked for the Army for almost 10 years now. Beer-swilling hillbillies are everywhere. In the military and TLAs, they just have “General” in front of their names. This is not to say that Borepatch is one of them of course.

  8. bluesun says:

For what it’s worth, I’ve got a bachelors in Mechanical Engineering. ‘Course, it’s a modern, public school bachelors, and for the past year I’ve been working in Civil, so some would probably say it doesn’t count…

  9. JD says:

Thank you Weer’d for the kind words. I think one of the best part of being a gunny is the folks like yourself and your wife that I have met. They have all be great people and I am better for having met them and been challenged by them to think and defend my position on things. . . but that is another blog post = )

I have made a number of friends at the blogger shoots – and look forward to seeing you all again and meeting new folks too!

  10. mike w. says:

Hell, I’ve got a Bachelors in……wait for it….. Political Science. Compared to many of you I’m an idiot! 😛

  11. Jake says:

Lies and name calling are all they have. Reason, facts, and history are certainly not on their side!

And to echo maddmedic: I am an EMT-I and a paralegal. I work with doctors, nurses, medics, soldiers and marines, police officers, and lawyers. The EMT’s and medics I work with are also engineers, doctors, nurses, lawyers, administrators, soldiers and marines, and police officers, or college students (graduate and undergrad) who go on to be all of the above plus physicists, chemists, architects, teachers, and so on. A rather large percentage of these are, like me, gunnies.

Like maddmedic, we have all seen firsthand the mess that humans can make of one another, with and without guns. Many of us either responded to or were on standby for the Virginia Tech massacre, and for the recent murder of Officer Derieck Crouse. And we are still gunnies.

Most of us are, as shown, far from “uneducated”. And we are still gunnies.

Most of us are far from “Hillbillies”. And we are still gunnies.

Being a “beer guzzling” anything doesn’t go well with being in EMS. And we are still gunnies.

Lies and name calling are all that’s left when facts and reason oppose you.

  12. Knitebane says:

I call shenanigans on this entire post.

    BBQ in New Hampshire? Unpossible.

This kind of uncritical reportage makes all of the information here highly suspect.

    • Weerd Beard says:

LOL, as a Yankee I can’t claim to be an expert in the Southern High Art, but this place has a good smoker going, and the food was DAMN tasty!

Still no place around here to get a proper chicken fried steak unless the wife makes one for me! 🙂

  13. Larry says:

No degree here (working on it), just a retired Navy knuckledragger who makes his living fixing semiconductor making machinery here in the South. I do like a good pale ale and this roof over the toolshed here is bought and paid for. Rednek R me!
Call me what you will, I know who I am and I don’t need validation from anti-freedom type folks.

    • Weerd Beard says:

I drink 40s and Hobo Wine! (I also drink fine wine and single-malt scotch! Not to mention I’m a connoisseur of Martinis) And I’ve spent a LOT of time doing field research with the salt of the earth, and I’ll say there is something to be said about Hillbillies and Rednecks.

They provide for themselves and they feed their families, and if it breaks they fix it, and if you do them right they’ll remember you and return any favor tenfold.

Have cyber stalkers like these creeps done anything like that?

  14. Tango Juliet says:

Some of the best and brightest people I know are gunnies. They are, almost without exception, “can do” folk who I would be proud to call “friend.”

And best of all, they don’t spend their days dreaming up schemes to control other people’s lives.

  15. JD says:

Folks I hope I didn’t step on any toes, I call out the degrees to push back on the anti folks and their fool ideas (they seem to put much stock in them. . . which should make you think right there). I have to say some of the smartest folk I have worked with on engineering projects did not have degrees. . . I apoligize in case anyone took offense.

I will be the first to admit you learn much more doing things than sitting in school just so you can have a piece of paper. . .

  16. Damn… They dun figgered me out.

Guess theres nothin fer it but to embrace my redneck hillbilliness. No point in gettin myself no edumication cause that girl dun called me dumb anyway.

Aint gettin rid of my guns though. Even an unedumicated hillbilly like me can do the mathey-maticks on that score. If I give up my guns, maybe one of them bad fellers is gonna come along and rape one of my daughters. I gots somthin for his ass… hoo hoo yes I do. And I dun got me some constitutional rights too. Guess I’m edumicated enough to know that huh?

    s

  17. Jack says:

BS and MS in Aerospace engineering.

But that’s besides the point. Once again we see the anti’s elitism and aristocratic roots.

Which makes sense, the core to their beliefs is that the “commoners” cannot handle X

  18. Bob S. says:

    Let’s see.

I have just an Associates of Arts and a Bachelor’s of Business Management.
In my chosen profession, I am responsible for interpreting governmental regulations and International Standards.

    So strike one.

    2nd Amendment?
Please tell me how it makes sense that the Militia (the whole of the people) are supposed to protect their Country, Their State, Their City — but aren’t supposed to be able to protect themselves or their homes?

    So Strike two.

I don’t like beer. I prefer German white Wines or an occasional mixed drink.

    So Strike three.

Not surprising they get it wrong on all accounts.

  20. Anne says:

    I have to laugh since I am a gunny and a redneck…

Working on a PhD in animals science, most of the people I spend every day with are over-educated gun-toting rednecks. But, the livestock aren’t very live if you don’t shoot the things trying to eat them and you can’t work outside keeping them safe and healthy without getting some sun!

  21. Linoge says:

BS in Engineering from Georgia Tech, no less. Granted, not in the field I started in, and I have not really used my degree since I graduated (the Navy had limited uses for process optimizers), but the paperwork is still there, hanging on my wall (or, rather, it would, if we ever took the time to actually hang it). I wonder what Ladd’s degree is in… or Baldr’s, or Joan’s, or…

Oh, and not a huge fan of beer. Or whiskey (I know – no Tennesseean I). Or bourbon. Or scotch (much to my father’s chagrin). Tend to prefer sake, really…

  22. MAJ Mike says:

HEY!!!! I resent that!!! I am not uneducated. I have a Master’s Degree in History and Political Science, and I’m a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and Genreal Staff Officers’ Course.

  23. Tango says:

I am a former Marine, honorably discharged after having served 7 years as a Topographic Intelligence Analyst. I held a Top Secret-SCI security clearance. I am a father and a husband. I was measured when I was very young to have an IQ of 151 and excelled all through school. I am currently a Linux and SCO Unix systems administrator. I am a software programmer.

I am also a gunnie. (Sorry, ‘Gunny’ is a reserved term for Marines, so I’m utilizing ‘gunnie’)

  24. maddmedic says:

Amazing we can put on the right color socks, tie our shoes and find the front door in the morning it is!!!
And then make it to the bar and swill beer!!!

  25. Another funny thing is, I tote a gun around every day. Since I got my totin’ permit and started doing that, I have backed way off of drinking. I drink much less often, and when I do drink, I don’t drink anywhere near as much (volume) as I used to.

I avoid confrontation in instances where I would have waded in before. I am FAR less prone to road rage. All around, I am a much calmer person.

All because I understand that those things could have much more severe consequences now that there is gun that could possibly become involved.

In effect, now that I am a “gunnie” (or more so at least), I am much less the beer guzzling, uneducated hillbilly that I used to be. Well, except the uneducated part. I do have an AS degree, but I will always consider myself uneducated because I am constantly aware of how much I don’t know. I don’t thing a degree of any sort would change that.

  27. Molon Labe says:

Though I am neither, I would far rather be a beer-swilling Redneck that can, and will, defend himself than a drink with a pinkie finger in the air elitist that has neither the intestinal fortitude nor inclination to defend himself and would rather have others (carrying guns) do that for him.

  28. McThag says:

    Associates in Mechanical Drafting.
    Associates in Machine Design.
    Bachelors of Business Administration.

No degree in it, but being mechanically inclined means I can do many gunsmith, carpentry and auto-mechanic jobs too.

I doubt that gun-grabbing ivory tower snob has ever gotten their hands dirty, let alone accomplished something as complex as an engine swap.

    Oh yeah; I cook too.

About the only thing they got right is that I like me some beer. Like the rest of us, I don’t drive or carry when I am going to be drunk.

  29. Borepatch says:

Weer’d, you know me, and so you know that you can just leave it at “Super crazy” …

And as to BBQ, we thought that Tennessee’s in Framingham was quite good. No hush puppies, though.

  30. Jon says:

I have a bachelors (poli sci – that was a smart choice *g*) and 2 masters, my wife has a bachelors, 2 masters and a doctorate and we both work in the ivory tower of academia. Doesn’t stop us from being gunnies through and through.

  31. Ace says:

Damn. I just have a BA in English and I write SF/F pulp adventure stories. Compared to all-y’all, I’m uneducated…
