Gotta love this old saw!

I’m a hunter and a sportswoman. I own guns, but not for self-defense. I support gun control laws. I would happily vote to repeal the Stand Your Ground law in my home state of Oregon. In other words, the N.R.A. does not represent me.

Nor should it. The NRA supports the 2nd Amendment. As I like to point out, George Washington didn’t cross the Delaware River to get to his Duck Blind. The 2nd Amendment has never been about hunting. Further the 1st Amendment isn’t about tweeting what you had for breakfast, either. It IS about your freedom to speak out against a Constitutionally protected right, the right to self defense, and to tell lies about the NRA. Nobody cares one way or another about Suzie Mom-Blogger talking about the trials and tribulations of poopie diapers. People DO want to silence people who are a direct threat, like your malicious and ignorant statements, or from hate groups like the KKK or the New Black Panthers.

The Constitution doesn’t allow for their silencing simply because we may not like what they say. I think this is a good thing…you probably do too, but don’t think the other Amendments should apply so liberally.

I would like to hunt, but overall I live in a fairly urban environment, for me to hunt it would need to be a planned vacation, not weekend excursion or a fair weather pastime like it is for you. My guns are for the defense of my life and the lives of whom I care about.

What are your guns for? For personal enjoyment, and the killing of meat we have a surplus of at the local grocery stores. Whose opinion is relevant now?

Of course who’s relevant and who’s a stuffy elitist is irrelevant, as the 2nd Amendment doesn’t put any preclusion on hunting, and not only do I have zero issue with the sport, I’d love to participate. But she doesn’t want me to, because my hunting rifle looks scary.

Lily Raff McCaulou is a white woman voting for Jim Crow laws because she isn’t black, nor are any of her family members, and frankly she finds blacks scary.

And this attitude is why their side is losing ground so rapidly.

Reads like the standard boiler plate Ellie Light letters to the editor that get printed around these parts, claiming to be from NRA life members upset at whatever liberal approved slight the NRA did this week. From Oregon, huh. Isn’t that where the whiny guy lives that actually remains a life member to argue with the NRA fundraisers when they call, then write columns bragging about how he puts them in their places? Or was that Washington state?

    • Kristopher says:

The libtard in question is apparently an immigrant from NY state.

She is welcome to move back there if she doesn’t like the way people do things in the western US.

The is publishing in the NY Times because she knows she would get a raft of crap if she posted that screed in a Bend paper.

  2. ZerCool says:

Come hunt with me this fall. πŸ™‚

  3. MAJ Mike says:

Back when I taught U.S. History in high school, I made it clear to my students that the Second Amendment was about the people defending themselves against an abusive government. I asked them, “How will you protect the other nine amendments without the Second Amendment?” The Second Amendment has never been about duck hunting.

    • Weerd Beard says:

What’s odd is how many anti-gun people live in New England. There are minuetman and patriot statues EVERYWHERE, and our public buildings are often adorned with Brown Bess muskets with their bayonets fixed, and mass graves of fallen British soldiers are clearly marked in public spaces.

Yeah the first settlers of this land had to shoot ducks, deer, and fowl to keep from starving, but they also kept those arms to protect themselves from the criminal element, waring natives, and from the dangerous beasts that threatened their lives and their livelihood.

Eventually when the disrespect and oppression by their government got too great, they took up those arms against their own King and won their freedom. Its in the ground here, we celebrate it, we even named our football team after them….and so many choose to ignore that when it comes to short-sighted, and documented-failure policies.

  4. Thirdpower says:

Another Fudd. Here in IL, you can’t use rifles to hunt and I wonder what she’ld say to the fact that the Lightbringer voted for a law that would have banned most shotguns.

Wonder what she would say about the Wittington center and all the hunter education courses the NRA gen ops section runs.

    Not like she really cares.

    • Weerd Beard says:

Oh yeah, It wasn’t even worth my time to fisk that article, because she obviously didn’t even scratch the surface. The bottom line is she’s a “Progressive” who happens to be into hunting. She’s probably VERY insecure in this as “Progressives” believe that rights are GIVEN by the .gov, and that need must be presented in the application form…and well I have a freezer filled with meat from various animals that were sold to me by my grocer who didn’t kill the animal either.

So she’s obviously trying to get some love from those who hate ALL GUNS, and think her chosen hobby is cruel and unnecessary, by attacking the NRA in a knee-jerk fasion by attacking a strawman that is so poorly constructed it better resembles a mattress than a man.

She didn’t make even a slight effort to verify her assertions, so why should I waste my time doing it for her?

      • Thirdpower says:

Convenient that they find a woman ‘hunter’ right after women and families flooded the NRA convention.

        • Weerd Beard says:

Well there’s another fact she ignored. The NRA has members…scads of them, as a matter of fact.

Anti-Gun groups don’t. They have employees and interns…but no members, and no support.

Hey but we should listen to her silly little opinion because her views are somehow more relevant than millions who think she’s a nut.

          • Thirdpower says:

It’s also conveniently close to the election and the AHSA is no longer. They need someone to try and push some ‘sportspersons’ over to vote for Obama.

Her wording is almost EXACTLY the same as Schoenke’s was in ’08.

  5. Joe in PNG says:

    What she is really saying:
I’m a hunter…“= Dad took me duck hunting once, when I was a teenager, and I bitched the whole time about how cold it was!
    …and a sportswoman“= I run marathons… well, I’m in training to run one… um, speedwalking counts, right?
I own guns…“=Well, my husband has a few old rusty guns he inherited from his grandfather we keep locked in a safe.
… but not for self-defense.“=We live in a gated neighborhood, and we have a home alarm system.

The rest of the comment needs no translation.

    • Weerd Beard says:

      β€œβ€¦ but not for self-defense.β€œ

Because the guns for her defense come in a cop’s holster, not from her gun safe!

I love how “more civilized” and “Enlightened” means trusting a total stranger to risk his life while you hide.

  6. “I own guns, but not for self-defense.” is a LIE. If this woman really does own guns and really does hunt, all it would take is a very short time in the attentions of a stalker for her to be scared enough that she WOULD use her firearm for self defense when/if that stalker came for her. Just because she hasn’t been in a situation where she has needed a gun for self defense doesn’t mean that she never will.

Unless, of course, she is one of those truely rare people who would remain a pacifist even in the face of a deadly threat. I can respect that dedication to a moral value, even though I don’t understand it or share it. However, in my experience, a vast majority of the people who claim to be such are hypocrites who would abandon that ideal at the slightest hint of danger. To be a hunter AND such a pacifist? Not likely.

    • Jack says:

And that’s not even getting into the fact that would she be against violence via proxy? Because that’s what calling the police is.

      • Weerd Beard says:

Its like the self-proclaimed “Pacifists” who will call the cops to shoot an attacker. They’re peaceful so long as their hands don’t directly get dirty.

And yeah, find any of those “pacifists” and start squeezing their windpipe, and watch how fast they start to hit you.

“Pacifist” is in quotes, because the operative term is “Coward”.

There are real pacifists too, think of the monks who allowed themselves to be slaughtered by the Myanmar Junta in Burma without raising a hand in defense.

I can’t comment on their spirituality, but I think they would have served the world as a whole a lot better as monks and servants of their god than as fertilizer and contamination of the water-supply.

Me? I’m non-violent, but very ANTI-PACIFIST. I hope my guns are just cool possessions for as long as I live, and as long as they are possessed by my kith and kin….but if they EVER need to be used, I’m ready to do that.

        don’t test me, please.

  7. I want to go hunting with you and Zercool.

  8. Bubblehead Les says:

Let’s see. “90% of Gun Owners don’t belong to the NRA.” Hmmm. I smell a Meme.

“90% of Car Owners don’t belong to Nascar.”
“90% of Soccer Moms don’t belong to Fifa.”
“90% of Dog Owners don’t belong to the AKC.”
“90% of CandleStick Owners don’t belong to the CSGV.”

    Who’s next?

  9. GuardDuck says:

With her byline of Bend Oregon and her prominently proclaiming ‘her home state of Oregon’ you’d believe that she was a true western country type person. But you’d be wrong.

    From her bio:

I grew up in Takoma Park, Maryland, which is a cool, hippie suburb of Washington, D.C. I graduated from Wesleyan University with a degree in film studies and worked in New York City’s independent film industry before becoming a newspaper reporter in 2004.

So, uh, yeah – I don’t suppose the NRA does represent her.

    • Robert says:

Bend has the third highest concentration of hippies and hipsters in Oregon (behind Portland and Eugene). Living there definitely does not make her a “true western country type.”

  10. Cargosquid says:

Hunting is WAAAAAAY too much like work.

Cold mornings. Darkness. Hiking in the cold dark morning.
And if you succeed, you have to work hard cleaning and then carrying your deer, back to the truck.

    Hmmmm….maybe duck or rabbit hunting.

  11. Archer says:

Whoa, Weer’d. Why don’t you get excited and tell us how you really feel? πŸ˜‰

    Better yet: Tell her directly!

This could be an educatable fence-sitter, if she’d get her head out of where the sun don’t shine.

Plus, she says she doesn’t own guns for self-defense, but if the SHTF, I’d bet they’d reach for the “huntin'” shotgun as fast or faster than the phone.

  12. Tio Volatito says:

The anti-gun right people are trying a new tack. They lost with the blood in the streets argument. They lost the constitutional argument. Now they’re pivoting to a more popular message: You poor gun owners have been hi-jacked by the NRA = ALEC = Evil Corporations. You hear it in McCaulou’s post. Here argument? The majority of people who own guns don’t belong to the NRA. Therefore, the support for stand your ground, self defense, concealed carry, etc is corporate. Us regular folks don’t need any of that. The threat to us hunters and “common sense” gun owners isn’t some well-meaning Brady ban or restrictions, it’s those money-grubbing corporations that are devastating the environment, cutting wages, undermining democracy, etc.

I’m concerned that this sort of argument could gain more traction in the current political environment.

  13. 45er says:

I want to go hunting with you, Zercool and Agirl. πŸ™‚ GROUP HUNT. Or, well, if you guys make it down here I’ll take you.

  14. MAJ Mike says:

I consider myself a heavily armed pacifist. If you mess with me, I’ll shoot you in the face.
