Does This Seem Right To you?

Have a read of this story:

The former public works inspector for a northern New Jersey town has admitted stealing $460,000 in quarters.

The Record reports Thomas Rica pleaded guilty Wednesday to four counts of theft. In return, prosecutors will recommend that he receive five years’ probation and pay about $200,000 in restitution to Ridgewood.

I did a little Google-fu and found somebody willing to do some of the math for me. So $20 in quarters is about one pound. $460,000 is 23,000 pounds! That’s 11.5 TONS of quarters! That’s a LOT of work there!

And he’s on probation AND has to only pay back $200,000? So he got over half that money free? Bad Justice!

That is nuts. 46#/day or 3,600 quarters/day. How did that go on for two years?

Think you are missing the big picture here — the city government had such lax procedures in place that someone who didn’t belong there could enter the counting room.

The people working for the city didn’t notice him filling his pockets (and if you believe that one, I have a bridge for sale).
The people who were supposed to be monitoring the collection trends; didn’t notice nearly have a million dollar shortage in 2 years?

And these are the people who are supposed to be keeping the citizens safe, the roads built, and services running?

Tell me again how we don’t have to worry about an overbearing or corrupt government.
