Home Again

Home again from the convention. Had a great time, and everything went REALLY smoothly from the logistics side of things.

The big take home was I got to meet (and get drunk with… when my roommates brought him into my hotel room while I was sleeping) the director of Lloyd the Conqueror , and get a sneak preview showing of the movie before its release date.

It was a bit inside baseball for the mainstream, but anybody into Gaming or LARPing will love it, I suspect.

Also Erin is WAYY onto the pulse of the culture. My Little Pony is HUGE. We actually had a MLP event that was so big it quickly filled the room capacity so we moved it outside the convention just so everybody could have room. So many people dressed as the various Ponies (in human form, which was further interesting) this thing is HUGE.

Watched a few episodes of it myself in my down time, and it really is a damn good show.

So there’s that!

I find it remarkable that quadrupedal characters are immediately recognizable when played by humans, especially when much of the costume is based on clothing that the ponies normally don’t wear. But somehow you know, you just KNOW, that Twilight would wear a private school uniform, and Rainbow Dash would be wearing running shorts, and Rarity would have a slinky floor-length gown. It says multitudes about the depth of the cartoon’s characterization that they so easily transfer to real world equivalents.

(Also, they are freaking adorable. I have yet to see a costumed pony-player who I don’t want to hug.)

One of us… one of us… one of us…. 😉

Gooble-gobble. Gooble-gobble, we accept you, one of us.

And that’s not even getting into how obvious what AJ would wear. The details of Fluttershy can change, but the overall theme of shy and demure would prevail. With Pinkie being the opposite.

There’s also how the characterzation is encompassed from the writing, to the voice aciting, to the animation itself. A lot goes into the facial expresions and the beats of the movement.

Though for character recognizability the wigs also do alot. Since each character has unique hair styles and colors (okay two are pink).

And that’s not even going onto the fact that each character has a unique sigul that marks them.

We were remarking that while there were a bunch of different interpretations of some of the Ponies, there were like 5 Applejacks, and ALL of them were wearing red check western shirts. ALWAYS Red.

Also generally some Daisy Duke style shorts, orange tights, and cowgirl boots.

      Yeah, I’m a Bronie now!

I like the Iron Cross on the Vulcan … interesting alternate universe there.

Apparently the Terran Reich is ruled by Der Kaiser.

  3. I spent most of my weekend at a Steampunk con here in North Carolina. I had a pretty good time. I’ll be working on a costume for next year. Theme is “Weird Wild West.” No phaser for me. I’m planning on carrying a Schofield Revolver or something similar.

Since I’ll be a Pinkerton Detective, I wonder if I can get my wife to make me a sap.

Glad you had a good time! 🙂

I’ve just gotten back into the fold, mostly due to a Kickstarter event on one of my old favorite boardgames OGRE. From there a friend introduced me to JourneyQuest and Gamers: Dorkness rising. I just picked up the new release of Fortress America. In the fall, I’ll be going to Chi-Con/World-Con ’12 w/ my sister and her family. I first went over 20 years ago.

And yeah, I watch MLP w/ my kids. It’s a damn good show.
