Sexist Denial in the Wild

At Wal-Mart

Is there such a thing as “too much” gun for a woman? That’s what one Walmart employee in Clarksville, IN, implied when he “firmly refused” to sell a Mossberg 930 to petite Prayse Dangler, she claims….The man behind the counter looked at me in disbelief when I pointed out the beefy Mossberg 930 Tactical weapon… The man then proceeded to interrogate me about what I wanted it for and how it would be used. He said that I didn’t hold it right and that I needed “something else better suited to you”. He put it back in the case and firmly refused to sell it. – All because I am a petite young woman!

He threatened me with the FBI and accused me of purchasing the gun for “someone else” – namely my husband who was with me. My husband informed him that IF he was the one that would be primarily using the gun then he would have bought it himself…

12 gauge is a rugged caliber, but that Mossberg’s gas-operation does a BUNCH to tame it. My wife shoots a gas-operated shotgun, and she’s VERY recoil sensitive, its hardly too much gun for somebody who’s willing to log some range time and get familiar with it. Thankfully when my wife was buying her shotgun nobody said shit about the fact that I was standing right there giving her advice as she wanted to make sure she was getting the EXACT gun she wanted at a fair price.

  1. My wife bought me a Benelli M4 in desert camo as a gift. She would shoot it if she could, but for her shoulder the 12 GA is too much, even 20 ga causes issues. (Remember she’s a disabled shooter and lacks a lot of muscling most of us have in that shoulder).

Guy at Cabela’s didn’t even bat an eye when she bought it. I was in another part of the store and she knew I was wanting a shotgun for the home and 3 gun eventually. Our anniversary was coming up and she said “why not!?”

    I know, I’m a lucky guy. 😀

Has she tried a gas operated shotgun? They tame the recoil a good bit.

Of course she shoots an AR, which IMHO covers all bases, so there’s really no need to flirt with the shoulder-killers.

Do you think Willy Wal Mart there has a shrine to Elmer Fudd above his gun case full of Remington 870s, duck shotguns and the .22 bolt action his grandaddy handed down to him?

  3. topofthechain says:

Edit Remington 700’s, I should know better that an 870 *is* a shotgun.

    • Weerd Beard says:

Either way, an 870 with wood furniture and a 28″ barrel, and the magazine limited to 2 rounds is a perfectly acceptable gun. The same gun with the plug removed so it holds all 5, black furniture, and a 20″ or 18.5″ BBL is scary and evil!

My daughter in law, on her first time shooting EVER, ran my GP-100 okay with .38 special loads. Then we stepped it up to .357 magnum rounds — 4 out of 6 in the black and the other two close.

She hit an 18×18 inch steel plate with DanielS’ Barret M82 on her first shot. She was consistently pinging it with my — with MY Mosin Nagant 91/30 and liked the lighter M44 better !

So I have very recent experience with NOT judging what firearm in right for what person — that person will let you know.

Thankfully stories like this are occurring less often.

    • Bob S. says:

Should have noted that the target for the M82 was at 300 yards.

And the steel for the Mosin was at 100 yards.

Yep went shooting with a friend, his girlfriend, and one of her friends one night. His GF and her friend were little willowy things…I bet the two of them together weighed as much as me! (at least back when I was squeezing into 38″ waist jeans)

This was the first night I ever shot a Mossberg 590, and the range we were on was slugs-only for smooth-bore. Both of them ran several 8-shot mags of high-brass slugs down range with pure glee!

I think I may have had my M44 on hand, and they both shot and loved it too! Yeah, there are no rules for such things!

Wow. Just wow. Man I wish I lived close enough to visit this guy.

  6. Braden Lynch says:

Has he ever heard of “reduced recoil” ammunition? Guess not.

Threaten the FBI! Yeah, because those straw purchasers are always seeking out easily concealable shotguns…not. It’s a new species, the Doofus Fudd.

    • Weerd Beard says:

Hell look at my above comment on 110lb little ladies sending high-brass slugs down range with a pump gun! I’m a big dude with a beard, and I don’t like slugs THAT much!

Ain’t no way to judge how somebody is going to like one gun vs. another.

Heck my wife will shoot her 12 all day long and love it, but gave my SKS back after shooting a single round. It wasn’t the recoil, its just that she loves shotguns and is willing to deal with the recoil on them.

      • Braden Lynch says:

You are absolutely right. Preference, experience and technique are all important things.

Now the shotgun in question was an auto loader, so as you said, it is going to shoot softer. I was just pointing out that there is also the reduced recoil ammunition available which keeps my pump shotgun very pleasant and would make an auto loader even more viable. The RR ammunition is a game changer for the argument that shotguns are terrible because of recoil.

Wow, what a Fudd. She shoulda just called over the manager. “Hi, this tard doesn’t want 600-ish dollars of my perfectly good money. He also said your mom is fat.” 😀

  8. Christina says:

I just had a similar experience at my wal-mart I went in today to by myself a 770 remington the first rifle I would have ever bought myself with my cousin and the guy behind the counter refused to sell it to me without my husband coming in for a background check and he was not even with me or even knew about my decision to purchase it. He said ” I do not believe it is for you and I will not sell it to you because I have seen you in here before with your husband” and heres the kicker I work at that walmart and my husband is my ride because I do not drive so thats why he’s seen him with me but because I am a female he refused to sell it me saying he did not believe I was buying it for myself.
