GROAN!!

So Yesterday I decided it was time for the Bacon vodka. I’ll do a post on it, but I’ll focus on the problem. Filtration. I first filtered with cheesecloth, which really didn’t do very much at all. So then I re-filtered with a coffee filter which took AGES as the filter clogs after ingesting a mere 4oz of vodka, and still it needs another filtration. I’ll try again. I think I need a pump filter, or maybe a vacuum flask setup for the kitchen. Any ideas? I will say I took a nip of the vodka and It tastes REALLY good, I’ve certainly perfected that part, just need to perfect the filtration.

Also the Mrs. is up in New Hampshire helping her Aunt with some computer issues, she planned to spend the night there, but she failed to pack her Medicine so I had to make a quick trip to NH (they met me half way).

Lastly I was home from the medi-drop, was putting my gun away and decided to futs around with some of my guns. I was looking at the action on my FAL, and was curious how it compared to the wife’s Beretta Ureka shotgun…so I decided to take it apart.

I did a quick clear and function check, then took it down. Got to the point where I was pulling the action out and it got stuck and the op-rod pulled free…then the bolt stuck into the receiver. Turned out I had attempted to take the gun down with the action closed and the hammer down. (WRONG, remove barrel and gas piston, then ease action forward). I managed to cock the hammer, but with the op-rod detached the locking block was locking the bolt in place. I was tired and frustrated so I left the mess in a pile and went to bed. (FYI dissembled is legal under Massachusetts “Safe Storage” laws…isn’t it silly that I had to think about that in a locked house by myself?)

This morning after a cup of tea and breakfast I managed to get the action out, and the gun all back together. Another reason why I love my FAL, that gun comes apart so easily, and there aren’t any goofy puzzle peices and tricks where if you do something in a wrong order you can get yourself into trouble.

Still nothing like an Italian Shotgun to make a gunnie feel humble. 🙂

Try a french press. That should get the bigger chunks out, then you can either leave as is or go through the coffee filter.

I always get a kick out of you easterner’s running between states so fast. I think the closest town of any size in a different state from where I am is about four hours south, in Idaho.

I always get a sinking feeling when I take a gun apart. Sure, I may be a mechanical engineering student, but when a spring goes “POING” and a rod shoots across the room, it’s hard not to get flustered…

Heh, Reminds me of one of the reasons why I HATE Full-length rods on 1911s. My S&W1911 came with one…it also didn’t come with a bushing wrench. No biggie, you just depress the bushing all the same, just do it gingerly as the lip is sharp.

*PING* there she goes. there happened to be like 2 weeks worth of newspapers in the room (Used to save em up and clip coupons all day) and I heard the plug hit paper. As I was digging through paper I noticed they were turning red. Yep, the plug had sliced the tip of my thumb open. Thankfully nothing too severe, but it sucked!

I’ve been using a thick cotton sock to filter my peanut oil after deep-frying. Much more efficient at capturing some of the finer particulates than multiple layers of cheesecloth. Might be worth a try.

Yeah, that’s one I think most FAL owners have run into. IIRC, the big trick to the hammer-jam for most FALs is to just take the dust cover/rail off. That’ll F your zero if you have a scope on the rail, but better than a jammed up rifle. Alternatively, if you can get the hammer down, cool. Easier to pop the dust cover on some setups, though.

I dunno about para-models, but the one time I attempted to pull the carrier group out with the hammer down it simply wouldn’t slide out. Once I figured out what I was doing I just closed the receivers and racked the action, rinse repeat.

And no scope rail for the sights luddite. Make mine iron!
