Congrats on the 365th episode!
Maybe I’m breaking with a lot of the 2A community here, or at least the libertarian part of it, but I don’t like this trend of de-facto legalization of marijuana. I don’t think there is a pro-social argument for it. Not at the individual level, and not at the societal level. To quote my dad, there’s no such thing as a pothead with a to-do list.
At the same time, should this law stand? No. Possession of marijuana or other controlled substances isn’t a violent crime, so it shouldn’t stand as a prohibition or even an enhancement. The kinds of things that dope fiends do with firearms are already covered under other laws.
Looks like the DOJ is trying to sink this one, at least according to GOA’s recent article on it. We’ll see how it plays out.
I think there are two distinct camps in 2A, the Conservative branch that supports 2A but also the War on Drugs, and the libertarian leaning branch that splits with the other side on things like drugs, Queer Rights, and things like Felons regaining rights.
For your Dad’s adage, he’s not wrong. A POT HEAD generally doesn’t have a to-do-list, if you define “Pot Head” as “One who centers their identity around consuming marijuana”. That being said there’s a vast gulf between somebody who has a bottle of liquor in their pantry, and dangerous alcoholic. Same with marijuana users, there are people who keep some gummies around for a special occasion, or for when they do uncomfortable social things…..and there are people who show up to work with their eyes at half mast, and spend some time in their car on lunch break.
And while you might go over to a friend’s house and have a beer, we aren’t on that same social level with Marijuana (tho I have been over at a friend’s house and they asked if they could get me a beer or a gummy).
Either way I don’t think the Feds backing away from Marijuana would be a net positive for the US.
