So Mamdani was born in Uganda to Indian Parents, and yes some Indian classically ate with their hands. In the North it is more common to scoop food with breads like Naan, scooping and making taco-like bites, or in the South they will eat with rice and scoop
But Granpa is cooking for Orphans in an Orphanage that needs the food due to poverty.

He’s eating super cheap Indian food from street carts, but the foods Americans wouldn’t eat with their hands, he gets a fork or spoon….
Eating with just the hands is out of desperation. If you can afford cutlery you use it.
Further Mamdani is wearing a Western suit….is he saying he also doesn’t use toilet paper?
In the end it’s all political theater.
