This Can’t Wait

Jay has some of his pictures up from the Blog Shoot. The only pix I have I’ve already posted…the Gorilla, there were a few that I hastily snapped with my phone that were too lame to publish. Overall at these events I’d rather be shooting, or talking with people. I attempted to take pictures the first shoot I attended, and I took a scant handful, so the other shoots I simply left the camera at home, and chose to just enjoy myself.

I had to steal this one from him, because it was VASTLY too awesome!

Now that’s Jay’s 360PD AKA “The Snubbie From Hell”. Now if you were keeping track at home, at the NRA show bought some Fancy VZ Grips to pretty up his gun from the standard black Hogue Rubber grips.

I asked him if he’d shot the gun with the new grips yet. He hadn’t. We were both a bit nervous, as the Hogue grips have a bit of give to them, and allow a VERY sticky grip. The G10 grips have about the hardness of finished wood, tho have the grip of unfinished wood in the hands.

Jay started out with some mouse-fart .38 loads from Zercool, I’ll let him chime in on the load data, but watching others shoot the gun, I’d assume they were 158 gr. heading down range in the vacinity of 750 FPS.

I have a .38 Gun, and I’ve shot creampuff loads through it. I had no such interest in re-creating the experience with a gun I don’t get to shoot very often. The picture is my blue dot load pushing a 158 grain jacketed bullet in the vicinity of 1400fps. There are MUCH hotter loads out there, but these are fun.

Actually the VZ Grips are better. Its still a handfull, and I don’t recommend shooting more than 20 full-house loads in a string as you’ll be cramping your hand pretty badly at that point. Jay and I suspect the grips let you hold the gun tighter and get a bit better hold.

Still as you can see, muzzle flip is PRONOUNCED! Also this load I cooked up for my Colt Trooper .357 which is all-steel. Recoil is quite manageable with that gun. I don’t get super aggressive with my crimping for fear of problems cropping up, so when this load worked fine on my gun, I went with it and loaded up about 500 rounds (a stock I need to replenish soon!), but with the snubbie every few wheels the 5th round jumps the crimp and needs to be ejected.

Maybe a LITTLE more crimping would be in order for the next batch!

Thanks Jay for snapping that great picture!

9 mm, .380, .45, Fireball … Whatever caliber you carry on a regular basis is the right caliber for you!

And while bigger is technically better, a larger caliber does you little good if you won’t shoot it and become proficient, won’t carry it, or can’t feel comfortable with it.

Also while there is a marked difference between .380 Auto and .357 magnum when it comes to muzzle energy, its not a tremendous difference, and certainly “One shot stops” are a total pipe-dream.

When you get down to closer cartridges 9mm vs. .40, vs. .45, Vs. .38 really is splitting of hairs with the finest of blades.

And hell, even a .25 in your pocket, while not the wisest choice in the world, is still wiser than going around unarmed, or with one of those silly Rape Whistles that my Campus thought were the king-of-cool.
