“Reasoned Discourse” Cowardly

So Clinton got heckled in Buffalo about Benghazi. Her response to the heckler was “We need to sit down and talk rather than yell”…which is valid…but ironic given that the heckler was being escorted out of the venue, and she didn’t talk any further about it.

Cowardly.

Cops and Guns

Here are a few stories sent to me by Les.

The first one is just sad.

Northern California sheriff’s officials and family members say deputies shot and killed a 13-year-old boy who was carrying a replica assault weapon.

Two Sonoma County deputies saw the boy walking with the replica weapon around 3 p.m. Tuesday in Santa Rosa. Lt. Dennis O’Leary says they repeatedly ordered him to drop what appeared to be a rifle before firing several rounds.

The gun is a Replica AK. Its realistically colored, sized, and has no orange tip on the muzzle. The kid was ordered at REAL gunpoint to put down his toy and he refused, and got shot. Everybody loses in this one.

Frankly I’m most upset at the family for not telling the dangers of these toys in public. I have no issue with realistic toys…but there are risks to everything, and those risks were NOT mitigated.

Now more negligent safety on behalf of officers.

A child pulled the trigger of a police rifle at a Southern California elementary school Wednesday, firing a bullet that shattered and created shrapnel that injured three youngsters, authorities said.

The AR-15 was locked to the side of a motorcycle that was on display at Newman Elementary School during an anti-drug program when a student managed to fire it, Chino police spokeswoman Tamrin Olden said.

“The bullet disintegrated when discharged by striking a metal plate where the barrel rests against the weapons mount,” and metal debris apparently struck some children and caused minor injuries, she said in a statement.

“It is likely that metal debris struck two children resulting in extremely minor injuries,” Olden said, adding that the children were treated at a hospital and released.

Now I have no idea what kind of mount was used, but something was VERY wrong if access to the safety selector and trigger were allowed by children on a loaded rifle. (Of course even if it was unloaded that’s a rule #1 violation)

I did a quick search of “Motorcycle AR-15 Mount” and found this page. Now some of those mounts completely enclose the receiver and fire-control group, and such a mount is perfectly safe. The one towards the top of the page looks a lot like what may have been the mount used. A Clam shell like mount that encloses the receiver and fire-control group, but also conceals much of the rifle. I can see police wanting to show-off by opening the mount, leaving the fire control group wide open for curious fingers.

Of course in the end the only safety worth a damn in the one between your ears, and these rifles needed to be in direct control of the officers…doubly since they were loaded.

“Gun Death” Another Sledgehammer

I thought this was a repeat of the earlier post…it wasn’t and it is REALLY bad!

A suburban Chicago woman is charged with murder in the death of her 6-month-old granddaughter.

Authorities said Monday that 61-year-old Alfreda Giedrojc of Oak Lawn used a sledgehammer and knife to kill baby Vivian Summers on Sunday morning. Prosecutors say the grandmother placed the baby on the floor and hit the baby repeatedly with the sledgehammer. They say the woman then retrieved a kitchen knife and slit the baby’s throat.

How the fuck can ANYBODY do this???? Further why is there concentration on “Gun Death” in debates of public safety? We have two common house hold items, EVERY house has a hammer or two, many have a sledge, and EVERY house has kitchen knives.

Yet we don’t see these kinds of murders every day. This is the same reason why with growing gun ownership we don’t see a rise in violent crime. It is NOT the tool, it is the monsters among us!

There are those of us who own lots of guns, knives, and other defensive arms and keep and bear them for our protection…and then there are the creatures who would murder a baby.

There is nothing related between them…

Grenade Runner

WTF does ATF do anyway?

In a case that is prompting comparisons to the botched Operation Fast and Furious, police believe explosives found at a murder scene in Mexico may have come from an American bomb-maker whom the U.S. attorney in Arizona refused to prosecute.

According to an internal U.S. Department of Justice memo, a “Kingery grenade” was among the 10 explosives found at the scene of a shootout between police and drug cartels in Guadalajara on Oct. 10 in which three officers were killed.

The “Kingery grenade” refers to those manufactured by Jean Baptiste Kingery, a California resident who made grenades in Mexico from parts sourced in the U.S. He also converted AK-47s from semi- to fully-automatic weapons.

ATF agents arrested Kingery in 2010, but the assistant U.S. attorney in Arizona at the time, Emory Hurley, referred to the grenades as harmless toys and told the ATF the case “lacked jury appeal,” according to the ATF supervisor in charge, Pete Forcelli. Forcelli had handled the case until the U.S. attorney declined to prosecute.

Is this enforcement agency doing ANYTHING to keep us safer, or are they just a rogue firm designed to HARM people for the sake of busy work?

Quote of the Day: “Reasoned Discourse”

From Joan:

I don’t usually publish “Unknown” comments. But I liked what you said so will do so this one time.

That pulls back the curtain a bit. You’ll note in purple beside where that comment appears her “Commenting Policy”

Comments are allowed but are moderated for civility and decency. My blog is intended to change public opinion about the gun debate and all readers will not agree with me. No comments that demean, debase, attack, call names, or are generally impolite, rude and offensive will be published. In general, comments that are “snarky”, mean, overly aggressive or harassing will not be published. Keep the language clean and respectful. Anonymous commenters are not allowed on this blog. Thanks to my readers for participating.

It should read “I will not publish comments I don’t like because I am an intellectual light-weight and I am so generally disliked I need to bask in anybody who make me feel inappropriately human”.

Its a hard life Joan has chosen for herself. I can’t say she doesn’t deserve it!

Also the “Ugly American” she’s talking about is more than likely an Australian.

Hey but its all America’s fault for making Austrian guns and all! Also shows she can’t even have a good time when she jets halfway across the world to a sub-tropical climate!

“Gun Death” Hate Crime

Tho not the one the media cares about:

Lakewood police are looking for five black men in their mid 20s after a 20-year-old Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier was stabbed to death early Saturday morning, police said. Friends have identified the victim as 20-year-old Tevin Geike….ccording to authorities, a vehicle passed by three active duty JBLM soldiers and yelled something about being “white.” One of the soldiers then yelled back something about the men treating combat solider with disrespect.

The car turned around and stopped next to the soldiers.

Police said five men got out of the car, surrounded the soldiers and a verbal confrontation started between the two groups.

The driver called the other men back to the car when he realized the men really were combat soldiers.

According to police, as the group returned to the vehicle, one of the men bumped into Tevin Geike . His friends saw him fall to the ground as the car drove away. He’d been stabbed.

Police say say the victim had multiple stab wounds. He died from his injuries at the scene.

So we have a twofer on the “Progressive” punch list. You see only “Gun Deaths” count, and only hate crimes count when its whites doing the hating. This is just another non-story in “Progressive Utopia”.

Quote of the Day: Joan Peterson

Amazing how tin her ears are!

Laws won’t stop every shooting. But laws can give a message that we will not tolerate the random carnage and get us to think differently about our gun culture. This does not happen in other countries where there are strict laws and an understanding that gun violence is not acceptable or to be tolerated.

Firs up, OF COURSE this happens in other countries. That’s an abject lie. But the bigger quote is how laws don’t PREVENT crime, they only allow punishment under the law when a crime is committed, and defines what that crime is so that lawful people can avoid committing crimes at their own discretion.

The tin ear part is Joan’s intentional ignorance and misrepresentation of the law. She’s voicing her feelings as support for passing MORE laws against guns and gun ownership…meanwhile she’s ignoring the laws we have already on the books. When lawful gun owners say “Don’t pass new laws, enforce the laws we have!” they mean it.

In America it is illegal to own a gun if:

-You are a convicted Felon

-You have Been committed for mental health involuntarily

-You are the subject of a protection order, or have been convicted of domestic violence.

-You are an addict of a controlled substance

-You are not a legal resident of this country

-You have warrants for your arrest

We have laws about HOW you can buy a gun:

-All handgun purchases must be through an FFL IN YOUR STATE or from a resident of the same state you reside in.

-All Long Guns must be purchased through an FFL or from a resident of the same state you reside in.

-You may not knowingly sell any firearms to any of the above prohibited people.

And of course Behavior is heavily regulated.

-It is illegal to commit an act of murder, assault, or manslaughter. Gun or no gun.

-It is illegal to threaten somebody. Gun or no gun.

-It is illegal to provide a dangerous environment to children in your house or on your property. This includes guns.

These are all FEDERAL laws. Further states have all sorts of miss-mash about what guns are allowed or not. How one can legally carry and where, and what constitutes legal carry.

All of this above is true, and yet Joan is STILL wringing her hands. These laws do NOT stop criminals because they are NOT enforced. Most of the publicized mass-shooters were people who did not violate any of the possession laws, but COULD have if law enforcement had done anything when these individuals were brought to their attention or placed in their custody.

The laws are on the books….they are simply not enforced in any reasonable sense.

Why would Joan’s pet laws be enforced any better than laws that have been around since before I was born?

That Portland AR Carrier

Miguel Beat me too it. I have an excuse, I was changing poopy pants!

Here’s the Story:

Portland police warned the public Friday about a man they found walking near Woodfords Corner wearing body armor and carrying an assault rifle and 120 rounds of ammunition, who later said he was preparing for a military training mission and welcomed confrontations with police….Police stopped Reed at 1 a.m. on Sept. 27 after a resident reported a man walking with an assault rifle on Vannah Avenue near Forest Avenue. The caller told police later that the armed man didn’t threaten him or anyone else he saw.

Police saw Reed walking along Forest Avenue with his rifle in a “low ready” position, with the barrel near his left leg, pointed at the ground.

Officer Kevin Murphy drew his service weapon and ordered Reed to put down the rifle. Reed complied, and followed orders to step away and then lie down on the sidewalk, according to a police report.

While I don’t open carry, I’m very friendly to the practice, and to the political movement. My “Big Tent” philosophy is that we are ALL open carriers. Just because you conceal your piece doesn’t mean your gun might not get uncovered as you go through your day-to-day. Also just like my objection to Wisconsin’s recently overturned ban on concealed carry, and to Texas and Florida’s ban on open carry, some climates dictate certain modes of carry. It is damn near impossible to safely and effectively open carry a handgun on a cold Wisconsin February…just as it is inconvenient to conceal all but the smallest handguns on a humid Florida or Texas August.

Also many people simply assume NOBODY is carrying a gun around them simply because they can’t see it. I’ve had people make statement against carrying guns to my face while I was carrying a gun.

Still when I carry I carry a handgun. Not because I’m opposed to rifles, but because I’m carrying to protect myself WHILE I go about doing life’s little chores. A rifle gets in the way. Further a pistol carried on the hip is NOT the same as a rifle carried at low ready. IMHO a rifle at low ready is the same as a pistol at low ready. If there is a sling involved it changes nothing.

Further the fact that this guy also seems to have some problems with illegal drugs does nothing to help the movement.

Thankfully unlike the clowns at “Occupy #city” the open carry movement DOES have central leadership, and this guy is acting outside of it.

Also interesting how that a man was open carrying a rifle in low ready, had drugs and restricted paraphernalia in his car, and all he’s getting is misdemeanor charges. Keeping us safe!

Cool Sea Creatures

I just wish the reporter hadn’t donned that silly wetsuit and snorkel for the presentation. As somebody who has worn a wetsuit on dry land prepping for a dive, I feel REALLY bad for her under those studio lights. Also I would NOT want to smell her dressing room after she peeled out of that thing! If she was dry getting into it, she will be wet getting out!

Oarfish are some of those rarely-seen pelagic fish that likely spawned lots of sea serpent legends.

BTW that fish eye is most likely a swordfish IIRC we covered it on this blog when it first washed up, and I think they did DNA testing on it. Also I suspect a quick look at the remaining skin from around the eye would quickly say if it was a fish or a mollusk.
