“Gun Death” Wrong Way

Brutal Mass Death. You’ve been warned, but no guns involved.

A wrong-way crash that killed five people, including three children, in Mesquite overnight has many in the small community of Lindale grieving Thursday afternoon.

Police said 27-year-old Krystle Carranza, of Lindale, was driving the wrong way Wednesday night on Interstate 20 with her three daughters in a pickup truck. The truck slammed head-on into an SUV heading the right direction at about 11:30 p.m. near FM 740 in Mesquite. Both vehicles burst into flames. Carranza, her three children and the other driver, Fred Ulysses Hammett Jr., 70, were all killed in the crash…Mesquite police are still looking into how Carranza got onto Interstate 20 going the wrong way. They’re also investigating how fast she was driving and whether alcohol was involved.

Is this massive body count any better because no “Gun Deaths” were involved? If you don’t think so it only means you’re human.

Odd Case

The antis are tossing around this story. I gotta say there is probably a LOT more to it.

Tavarious China Smith was not particularly lucky. A small-time drug dealer in Manatee County, Smith sold crack and marijuana not once, not twice, but three times to undercover cops.

But in one respect, Smith, 29, hit the jackpot.

On two occasions, more than two years apart, he committed homicides but was not charged thanks to provisions of Florida’s “stand your ground” law. Smith claimed self-defense in both cases and prosecutors agreed. He never faced a judge or jury for fatally shooting Nikita Williams, 18, in February 2008 in a drug-related incident or Breon Mitchell, Williams’ 23-year-old half-brother, in December 2010.

Smith’s only punishment stemmed from using a gun to kill Mitchell. Since he was by then a felon, convicted on drug charges, Smith wasn’t allowed to carry the Ruger .357 Magnum he used to shoot Mitchell outside a Palmetto nightclub in 2010. In January, a federal judge in Tampa sent Smith to prison after he pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

OK so first up, this again isn’t the anti-rights “Free Pass”, charges were filed, then dismissed. Still this isn’t a reason to repeal the law, as criminals plying their trade (which implied in these cases) are exempt from SYG.

I think like this Massachusetts case, its bad justice from bleeding heart prosecutors ignoring the law. Might I remind you of this famous case in Massachusetts.

But rather than attack a justice system that doesn’t follow the law, they attack the law….because gun control ALWAYS WORKS!

Programming and Beards

Mike W. sends me this amusing article.

What Separates Average Computer Programmers from Extraordinary Programmers? Beards.

Take, for example, Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie, who are pictured above. They have fine, beardly beards. They also invented C. A coincidence? Maybe. But certainly a beard can’t hurt. And studies that I just made up show a strong correlation between having a beard and being super intelligent. So why take chances? Start growing one today.

All I could think of was Sid from User Friendly. I had to have Vector explain the joke to me, as I know little to nothing about computer science. But beards and suspenders are the mark of a hardcore Linux/Unix programmer.

Certainly there’s something to be said about a man who isn’t going to waste time in the morning removing what God rightfully intended to be there in the first place. I will point that I never let my beard get super long, not for style reasons. This beard is a lifestyle choice, not a fashion decision. I simply don’t like to let it grow too long because I like to eat soup and actually get some of it in my mouth. But I certainly respect the Mega beard!

“Gun Death” Tree Felling

Odd that when somebody has an accident with a gun, its touted as a “Gun Death” and a reason to limit freedom. This case doesn’t count.

A 20-year-old man was killed Wednesday when a tree he was cutting down fell on him, officials said.

Emergency responders were called to a house in the 1500 block of Parsons Lane about 7 p.m.

The victim’s name had not been released late Wednesday. Witnesses told police the victim was a friend of the homeowner and that he was helping several other men cut the tree down.

Details are a little light. Of course anybody with the money can buy or rent a chainsaw without a background check or a permit. I believe in most urban areas you need a permit to fell a large tree, or possibly a license. I’ve felled a few trees in my life, and there is a LOT of finesse, and it can be VERY dangerous, as you can obviously see.

Hey, but no gun, no “Gun Death”, so no big deal!

Bluesun sends me this oddity

Somebody remixed the Windows XP startup sound into a dubstep.

We both agree that we are both transfixed and horrified.

So there’s that!
