Evening Dubstep Appreciation

Can’t sleep so I thought I’d discuss this song:

A great song, and it has just about all the factors why I really dig Dubstep.

First up it has a nice driving beat, and uses some nice funky otherworldly sounds. What’s the point of Electronica if it sounds like regular acoustic music?

Also note the heavy amount of dissonant chords as well as the 6/8 time signature which is common with dubstep. Other Commonalities that are particularly unique to dubstep are progressing the melody with sub-harmonic basslines, and setting the beat by modulating the sound.

This song also gets bonus points for being in a harmonic minor key, and having a video game sample in the mix! (AT 4:13 on this mix, bonus points for the first person to name it correctly, it’s an easy one)

Good stuff, and really neat to listen to if you’ve taken a music theory course or two, or can put your finger on many of the oddities in the mix.

My only problem with some dubstep is that it gets too repetitive. It’s why I like to mix it up with all sorts of electronica, from Infected Mushroom to even the jazzy stuff like Bonobo. Hmmm… Bonobo. I know what song I’m going to put up tomorrow, now!
