Looks like Lissa is already enjoying the free air down in the dick-shaped state.

We’ll miss you up here behind enemy lines, but I’m glad you’re enjoying the move! Maybe soon we can be free here!

Also I’ll point out that Florida’s carry laws kinda suck (no open carry, oddball restrictions on carrying in places that serve alcohol…of course that whole requiring a training class, money, and a permit thing….still the permit is NICE when you get it, lots of states recognize it, and while its a bit pricey compared to other states, its good for 7 years which is nice…also you don’t have to wait for NICS if you flash your permit!)

So we can all fight the good-fight together.

Indeed! I’m actually back in MA for now — I flew down for the weekend ’cause Mike had a work conference thing-y — but we DID manage to buy two — TWO — Evil Black Rifles during my trip!!!

There will be pix at some point! We picked up a pretty basic AR — although it has a flash suppressor AND a pistol grip AND big magazines AND an adjustable stock, hooray!! — and a smaller version in .22 🙂

        • Weerd Beard says:

Ok now you got me really confused. You didn’t get a Sig 556 and a 522?

I personally don’t like any gun that eats from a STANAG mag. But given that I think the FNH SCAR-16 is a REALLY nice rifle (but I dunno if I’d shell out what they’re asking), same with the Bushmaster ACR (again price seems a bit steep), but the 556 runs about the same price as a standard AR, but it has a nice strong piston-action, and no “Spoing” and a folding stock!

And well its a Sig…I’ll let you and Mike W. pine about that!

So why the hatred for stanag mags ?

          • McThag says:

Wally: The STANAG (a misnomer by the way) mag is a kludge. The rounds should stack in a nice continuous curve, the STANAG is straight for a bit then curved; this complicates feeding the rounds past the bend and makes the follower unhappy. Colt designed a constant curve mag way back in ’65 but the dimensional tolerances of the magazine well on an M16 are not consistent enough for it.

Luckily it’s not 1969 any more and there are improvements in springs and followers that account for the odd bend so it’s not really a source of trouble anymore. But like everything in about guns a problem from the dark ages is still considered current. Cracked or bent feed lips are a far more pressing concern and even an AK will not feed if those are damaged.

A genuine problem with STANAG magazines is the gigantic number of rejected mags out there in the market, giving correctly made mags a bad name. Mil-spec STANAG mags are aluminum and a wear item, they are meant to be discarded; this is a real issue in a place where you cannot buy new ones.

I like the sound of that! Sounds like ……… FREEDOM! (Complete with Sproing sound)

I didn’t want to comment on Lissa’s dignified blog, but here I’ll say the first time I saw that pic I did a doubletake…

A Florida CCW is not a bypass to the FDLE or NICS background check. It bypasses the state waiting period on handgun purchases and the county waiting period (if any) for long guns.

Florida’s “goofy” restrictions about alcohol and carry seem quite straight forward when compared to, say, North Carolina.

We have a requirement for some sort of class, and there’s a fee to acquire the permit; but it’s the same for everyone and codified into the law. We can’t be denied the permit (or have it revoked) because the local CLEO decides he doesn’t like the color of my shirt today. It’s also not a requirement to merely own a firearm, that requires no permit at all here.

Weer’d, I think you’re secretly jealous. 😉 When you live someplace with an AWB, full licensing and registration of every gun and owner, I don’t think you can really call Florida’s gun laws “goofy”. Besides, it’s “Micky” in Orlando.

Heh, Remember I’m from Maine, and when I’m not in Mass 98% of the time I’m in New Hampshire, Maine, or Vermont. Just read over their carry laws, and gun laws in general.

Don’t get me started on NC, you might be able to buy all the guns and mags you want, but when I went to the NRA con I didn’t even bother bringing a gun with me despite me having a reciprocal permit. And as far as I could see I would have had to violate a state carry law every where I went. L A M E. Thankfully next year will be in PA.

As for STANAG mags (yeah I know its a misnomer, but its a convenient name, and less confusing than constantly saying “M16 Magazine”) honestly I only really fondle the ones that belong to my friends who know their shit (or simply can’t buy shit fly-by-night mags) so I haven’t really seen too much of the feeding issues you mention (tho as a 1911 shooter I can talk about some shit-mags!!)

My issue with STANAG is its width just won’t fit anything I get excited about. I dislike .223 as underpowered, 7.62×39 is OK but a bit wimpy. 6.8 SPC and 6.5 Grendel are cool but I can’t get excited over bullets less than 150 grains. .30 Rem AR is really pushing things so hard to be a .308, why go to all that trouble? .450 Bushmaster is next to impossible to find, really cool round…but you can’t fit more than 10 of them in a 30-round tube, and attempts to get a bigger mag means a rifle that weighs as much as a Geo Metro…..

Its just not a good fit for me. Maybe one of these days I’ll buy a .223 STANAG rifle as a plinker/varminter, but not at the prices they’re selling them for these days.

      • McThag says:

If you have to be restricted to the M16’s mag-well both 6.8 and 6.5 a gigantic steps up from 5.56. 6.8 likes a different curve from 5.56 so the kludgy bend is even less of a problem. Problem with the 6.x rounds for someone in Mass is there’s no such thing as a normal cap mag for you unless you want to chance modifying a 5.56 mag; which is iffy.

For 147gr fun, I have my FAL (yes, I know, rubbing salt in the wound). I’m hoping financial reality allows for adding a SCAR 17S to the collection soon (prolly not though). Plus there’s always Garand.

Right after the fed AWB I bought a Daewoo DR200 and all the mags I could lay hands on at gun shows. Of the 15 mags I got, I ended up with 12 that were rejects and 3 that looked like they were salvaged from the bottom of the ocean. I managed to get 10 of them working (including all three ocean survivors) by building a wooden gauge for the lips, lots of bending and tapping, and new springs. The DR200 is more forgiving about feed ramps than an AR from some reason. I had to get Magpul followers for those same mags to feed the last three rounds in an AR.

I keep forgetting, did you escape _TO_ Maine or were you sentenced from there to Mass>
