Dunno if I would have done anything differently, but I took the FAL to the range without completely tearing it down. I just pulled the bolt out and made sure the barrel was clear and looked good.
Well it was shooting like a straight-pull bolt action. The gun would fire, and the action would stay closed. Having not dissembled the gas system before I didn’t want to do it at the range with no reference materials.
Well I think I have everything figured out (If anybody knows L1A1s my gun’s gas block has no marks on one side, and a groove that is cut the length of the block. I think the grooved face needs to be up for normal gas function) And Unix Jedi sent me this handy site to tune the system to my loads.
I’ll try again after dinner. Now time to run some errands.
And yes this post is JUST an excuse to use that title!
The FAL has an adjustable gas system. It goes from all the way open for fur-sure cycling to all the way closed to shoot rifle grenades. Yours is probably just set incorrectly.
I think best accuracy is achieved with “just enough” on the gas system, but I’m not a FAL expert so you’d have to talk with other people.
It wasn’t the regulator, I think it was actually the block reversed.
Think the same issue this dude was having

You might also want to check your gas piston. Evidently some Century L1A1s have two piece pistons which are known to cause problems.
Yeah mine’s a Solid peice of forged stainless, I suspect my L1A1 is from the early 80s.
it’s a gunny fail day. just received a so-called 9mm barrel. it is headspaced so poorly that i was able to run 38super in it :/
Jesus, wanna let us know who made the barrel so we can avoid giving them money?
A gunbroker special, completely unmarked :/ No big deal though, I was planning on rechambering it anyway. Just a little dissapointing to chamber rounds and have them sit so deep the firing pin didn’t even mark them.
Rechambering? Are you building a.357 Sig 1911???
Weer’d,
Obviously you have a defect FAL. Being a good friend, I’ll help you out by reminding you of the 3 Boxes of BS Home for Wayward, Unwanted, Misbehaving or Neglected firearms.
Since you are a good friend, I’ll pay the transfer costs associated with helping you get that malfunctioning arms out of your house…..just a friendly gesture, of course.
I don’t think I could place such a horrible burden on you, Bob, as we are friends afterall….also the gas block was simply installed upside down. 🙂
Arrrrrrrgh! It’s the gas PLUG! The plug goes into the gas block.
Is that the part that the bullet clip goes into?
Heh, All kidding aside, thanks, I’m new to this platform so I don’t have all the parts name down.
And honestly outside the 1911 there probably isn’t a gun that I could name all the individual parts for.
