Snowed In

Up in Maine, and the snow is starting to come down something fierce. Gonna dig the Mom-in-law out in the morning, and leave for home (and more shoveling) Tuesday.

Had a good Christmas with family. I’m especially pleased to hear my cousin got a job as a Merchant Marine on an Alaskan Fishing boat as an engineer. Should be much better work in every way from when I shipped out, and its glad to see him go from a little boy to a successful man. Of course our side is still winning. He was asking me about advice for a CCW handgun, and something his girlfriend can keep in the nightstand for the months while he’s at sea. I recommended the S&W M&P9c, there are a ton of them floating around the firing lines in Mass, and I’ve shot them a quite a few times and I’m very impressed. Its a small compact pistol but it shoots as comfortably and accurately as a full-size. He had mentioned he’s looked at .45s, but got hit with a bit of sticker-shock at the ammo prices. I put the beast to bed, and pointed out the difference between .45 and 9x19mm was purely academic when using good hollow points. I did mention that I hated .40 S&W because you pay extra money for minimal performance improvement, and the cartridge has an unpleasant recoil and is more susceptible to round setback and those nasty pressure spikes and explosions.
Also my Aunt took the big step and bought her first gun and was very excited to tell me about going to the range.

Mrs. Weer’d has developed a bit of a tizzy that is giving her a nasty case of the chills, and feeling tired. (tho she’s doing much better right now) but this was her for most of Christmas

Not a bad racket. Her mom came up with the interesting theory that maybe her head is now like somebody’s bad back or broken leg smarting when the weather takes a nasty shift.

Well I’m hunkered down, got my cup of tea, probably going to play some nethack on the alt.org server and I’m listening to the latest handgun podcast (which BTW has some discussions of some of my posts, thanks Eric!)

Stay warm, and stay safe people!

The snow is running pretty heavy here on the other side of the state, too. I’m also cooking up some tea (earl grey, hot) and waiting for a brisket to finish cooking. Getting ready to not go anywhere :-).

The M&P is a fantastic platform; I’m a 1911 nut (carry one, and own more than I use) but my competition gun is an M&P 9mm. Doing something to the ten-pound MA trigger is pretty much a requirement, though.

    Stay warm out there!
