1911 Maintenence

Found this video over at No Lawyers, Only Guns and Money and its really worth your time if you have a M1911 pistol or are thinking of getting one.

I didn’t realize the shorter 1911s fatigued their springs faster. Interesting. Also I changed the springs in both my 1911s early this year and so I had them all apart, I didn’t notice any cracking on the pin retaining plate, but that’s a good thing to note.

Nice little video to keep you out of trouble!

Yup. Ossifer’s Models and the even shorter 3″ guns eat recoil springs like popcorn.

(Personally? I’d avoid ’em like the plague.)

    • Weerd Beard says:

      yeah I’m a 5″ and 4/25″ sort of guy.

Tho again if it wasn’t for the market share and accessories I think a Kahr TP45 would work just as well as the 1911 commander that hides under my coat.

But I do like me some 1911s, do I need a good reason?

Same cartridge but smaller spring travel so higher stiffnees.

On extractor issues I haven’t had one break but my fullsize was picked up used, and had some problems. Removing the recoil buffer got most of it, but there was still some FTE issues. New extractor solved that nicely

    • Weerd Beard says:

Recoil buffers are things I like to avoid. You can prevent frame battering by keeping up with your recoil spring replacement, and when a buffer wears it can cause jamming.

If you keep your buffers relatively fresh and swap them maybe every 300-500 rounds you’ll avoid a lot of that…but IMHO why bother with the buffer at all?

      • Jack says:

Yup. But I really liked that buffer, saved me a couple bills because the seller didn’t bother figuring out why it didn’t work.

I stripped it at the show and saw the buffer and made the deal. The stupid thing made it impossible to release via pulling the slide back.

Real easy to fix that problem.
