How Gun Laws Work

So Joyce shell VPC tweeted this story.

A public school janitor was arrested Monday after allegedly leaving a loaded gun in a classroom at the Bucks Hill Elementary School, police said.

Cody Willette, 25, of Woodbury, was working at the school on Sunday when he apparently left the firearm on a counter in a classroom, Waterbury police Capt. Chris Corbett said.

OK so first up this janitor is an idiot. I don’t see what he was accomplishing. Not only is setting your loaded gun down off-body will generally make the gun LESS accessible for defensive use. I also don’t know what kind of work this jerk was doing, but if he was crawling around or moving in a strange way, they make holsters that aren’t affected by that. Also I’ll note this guy is a public sector union janitor, I doubt he was very concerned about eating off the floor after he cleaned it.

So what’s becoming of this?

Corbett said Willette does have a valid permit to carry the pistol.

Willette was charged with reckless endangerment and failing to properly store a firearm.

The school system placed him on administrative leave, Corbett said.

I suspect the administrative leave is just lawsuit protection so they don’t need to see this guy’s face until judgement is passed and they can fire his ass without fear of a wrongful termination suit, or Union flack. He may see jail time for this, but no matter what he’ll lose his carry permit, and his right to own firearms for the remainder of his life.

See that’s why gun owners are such law abiding people, its not that we’re angels, its that the stakes are so high. Can you think of any other possession that is regulated so severely for such minor oversights? It was stupid for him to leave his gun lying around, but let’s note that nobody was harmed, and the gun never went into the possession of a prohibited or minor person.

I’ve dropped my cell phone a few times and wandered off without it, and never once did I risk losing my phone privileges. You can actually KILL somebody in an auto accident and still get your driver’s license. I literally can’t think of ANYTHING that can be abused so superficially and be punished on such a grand scale.

OK now for the anti-angle. Why did VPC tweet this? Well they’ve been going to great lengths to vilify people with conceal carry permits, often through dishonest means.

Still let’s look at Connecticut. It scored 58 out of 100 on the Brady Score Card, and that 58 ranks it #5 nationally under California, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and New York, and above Hawaii which scored 50.

Looking at the Connecticut police it appears you need a permit to purchase and own a pistol in the state of Connecticut, also to just OWN a gun Connecticut requires a mandatory training course which includes live-fire. I’m sure they said in the class if you’re carrying your gun, don’t take it out and leave it lying around. That bit is kinda important. But then again mandatory training laws are bullshit too.

So yeah, that’s how it works, and I’m fine with that.

  1. Don’t forget about all those police officers and federal officers who have taken their guns off in bathroom stalls and forgotten about them.

And still have not only their RKBA intact, but their jobs as well. Jobs that allow them to do things you and I can’t, like carry their firearms inside a school, or drink alcohol while carrying concealed.

Well, I know I’m not. I’m actually fairly round – more than I like, actually. πŸ˜›

I think you meant “angels”. πŸ™‚
