Quote of the Day: Happy Pants

I guess a good quote has a million fathers (and Mothers) I heard it from Bluesun , who heard it from Nancy who may have heard it from AD on picking a first handgun.

“Buy what makes you happy in your pants.”

of course Silliness aside its a wonderful point. Some people in this post , not to mention the posts I referenced, assumed somehow the content was bashing the 1911 platform, yet all the authors are professed lovers of 1911, and Tam and myself have chosen 1911s as our daily carry guns, and I know Caleb carries a few among his rotation of carry guns, and competes with 1911s.

Also I’ve logged so much time with 1911 pattern guns I’m forever hooked, even when a new gun that runs as well or better than a 1911 comes along I’ll still be eying the 1911. Also before the Chevy Bailout, I made a comment about the Ford vs. Chevy revelry. If one was actually better than the other there wouldn’t be two. Of course one is still doing well as an auto company while the other is faltering might be good evidence of a superiority, but we can certainly say they both beat the pants off AMC. The 1911 isn’t going anywhere, people are still making them, and more companies are getting into the market, and very few are dropping out. Compare that with the above stated Luger P08and Wather P38. There is no modern Luger available except maybe some obscure collector replica house, and the closest thing to the Walther is the Beretta 92 pattern, which even Beretta doesn’t seem to excited with anymore, and was abandoned by Walther ages ago.

But what’s the biggest plus for the 1911? People just like them. Would I spend lots of money on guns, holsters, and ammo to shoot a gun I didn’t like? Would I trust my life with a gun I didn’t like? Would I do hours of dry fire and sight acquisition on a gun I didn’t like?

That’s the big trick, find a gun you like, and get that one. Maybe you’ll find a gun you’ll like forever, or maybe it’ll be a gun you’ll get sick of. I know lots of people who did both, but for the people who learned their first gun was a lousy one, if it was a gun they liked at the time, they learned from experience and from range work.

That is nothing but good!

Buy a gun you like, and have fun with it! If you’re having fun, what’s the harm?

Just for curiosity’s sake, what would be the AMC Gremlin of firearms?

“Because I want it” is about as good a reason as any to purchase a firearm… and so long as you are aware of its relative advantages/shortcomings, you will be golden for as long as you own it.

Now, if you try to take something and turn it into something it is not… well, that is not going to end well for anyone involved. But if you want a clunker 1911, knock yourself right out :).
