Tsunami in Japan

I guess Japan had an 8.9 (!!) earthquake and a massive tsunami.

Right now the news is giving the death toll as a number in the high 30s….unfortunately we all know that number is bullshit. I have a few friends over there, and I hope they, and their families are OK.

This is going to mess with the country for a long while I suspect.

My heart goes out to all who are effected, and for the people of Hawaii who are going to be hit with this soon.

I don’t know about that, Weer’d. I’ll bet that the headlines will be more about the massive financial losses and less about the death toll. Japan has been living under the threat of this sort of thing for a long time, and they are actually serious about it. I think that they will lose relatively few people given the unprecedented magnitude of this quake.

This is the largest quake to hit Japan in recorded history, and we are watching video of people watching the tsunami and some cars floating along. The Haiti quake was a 7.0, this is an 8.9, nearly 100 times as strong. Haiti was leveled and hundreds of thousands died. I think that after the immediate problems stop, they will be able to congratulate themselves on good prep and proper execution of their emergency plan.

Living in a rich country has its benefits.

Thoughts and Prayers to the people of Japan.

Good news though; it doesn’t look like the island of Okinawa was damaged in either the earthquake or the tsunami.
