COOL!

Neat that this target was set off by a pistol round!

  1. From talking to Joe during Boomershoot it came out that there is a mix of boomerite that works with pistol ammunition, more specifically 9mm and the faster varieties. The big slow stuff not so much.

That said, from what I’ve learned thus far, as neat as it is to be able to use a pistol, that’s usually also a sign that it’s a bit more unstable. While not a deal stopper it just means more care must be given to handling, and depending on what ingredients are used to increase sensitivity, they could fail unsafe instead of safe meaning you better use it immediately. Sulfur is a good example of this. It increases reactivity but it’s breakdown in the target can eventually cause spontaneous combustion.

Don’t know what they used for their mix exactly but I would be interested in seeing out of curiosity.

Well besides the people with BTAFE licenses like Joe, the average citizen will need to mix the components on site and consume them (with a glorious Kaboom!) to avoid going afoul of the law.

That being said, while neat that pistol rounds set it off, the use is limited, as it becomes a PITA to shoot a small reactive target at safe ranges with a mere pistol.

For me, so long as it reacts to .308, I’m happy! 😀

That being said, reacting to supersonic .22 from a carbine would be cheaper, and just as fun!

      • You haven’t met Rolf obviously. In small quantities I am willing to get closer than most people would.

I still need to do a blog post on that….

      • Actually .22 from a carbine is actually pretty easy. That’s actually how we test the boomerite mix. We a known ammo and rifle and adjust the distance to find the edge. We can work that back to find the required detonation velocity.

As for the ATF stuff, just because it’s the law doesn’t mean that people always do it that way. All it takes is one guy doing something stupid to screw it up for the rest of us.

I never said how quickly it can lead to the failure state. Some of them can easily be measured in hours. It depends on the mix.

Besides, you too can mix up boomerite on your own. The recipe is posted here. That’s not the exact mix because there’s some changes that are made to the current mix but the proportions are the same and it works just the same.

It’s actually cheaper too. Most of the binaries you buy are pretty expensive because of some of the materials in them. The hard part with boomerite is getting your hands on the materials.

Great googley moogley! Thanks, but since I’m no Hickok45, I’d have to be a little too close for comfort for shooting that with a pistol. I think my reaction would be similar to the cameraman’s, and don’t like the idea of squeezing off an extra round because i had just shat myself.
More power to them, but I think I’ll stick with the reactive rifle targets.
    😀

Great fun, but I do wish he had holstered that pistol after the last shot, and before he turned around.
