“Gun Death” Police Death

Jason Kilgore of “Cease Fire Oregon” is doing a little blood dancing on police officers:

Who would know better than our law enforcement officers about the dangers of guns on our streets? According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, 101 officers have died in the line of duty so far this year. 36 were by gunfire, plus one accidental shooting. Just a few days ago, one young officer was shot to death in the line of duty in New York. According to the Violence Policy Center, collected from FBI data, one in five law enforcement officers slain in the line of duty is killed with an assault weapon.

He’s THAT stupid that he could type that and not even NOTICE the irony! So he cites that only one in THREE officers are killed with gunfire (including negligence of the officer himself), but one in FIVE are killed with “Assault Weapons”! HE WROTE THAT! Yeah more officers are killed with “Assault Weapons” than are killed with guns!

Also note his focus on the small numbers of officers shot. Really this is more typical:

A police helicopter flying low over Atlanta on a nighttime search for a missing 9-year-old boy plunged to the ground in a neighborhood of shops and apartments, killing the two officers aboard, authorities said Sunday.

Go have a look where Kilgore cits, most of them die in vehicular accidents, a surprising amount die from heart attacks and other illness.

Hey but screw those officers! If you don’t die from “Gun Death” you aren’t even WORTH a candle, let alone a mention!

Not only are they stupid, but they’re not very nice!

  1. one in five is a smaller number than one in three. It’s 20% vs 33%.

Now anyone familiar with the actual statistics, which are readily available, would call bullshit right there. Handguns are far more common in killing of any sort than “Assault Weapons” and that is true of police killings as well. I suspect that VPC was talking out of their asses.

Checking out the LEOKA Table 27,

    http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/leoka/leoka-2010/tables/table27-leok-feloniously-type-of-weapon-01-10.xls

which discusses the particulars of the weapons used, in 2010 there were 56. One was killed with a car. 38 were handguns 15 “rifles” and 2 were shotguns. There is no mention of “assault weapons.”

I’d like to know how anyone could take this data and show that any particular percentage was killed with anything that could be labled as an “Assault Weapon.”

Also, from the data, you can see that relatively few officers get killed per year. We average around 54 per year who are “feloniously killed” in the last 10 reported years. That includes 2001 where even excluding September 11, there were 70 killed. 2011 and 2012 were pretty low years for killing cops, so the average should be down considerably.

  2. McThag says:

36 cops shot and killed OUT OF HOW MANY? The more I hear about cops dying in the line of duty the less I think that the job is particularly dangerous.

And since the antis define a normal pistol that can hold a normal number of rounds as an “assault weapon” I have to wonder how cooked that 1 in 5 is.

  3. Wolfman says:

Yeah, Im with McThag on this. Even if his numbers were real (suspect) that makes 7 ‘Assault Weapons’ deaths for cops. Out of tens of thousands of cops, and millions (literally millions, thats awesome) of weapons, his numbers are single digit- thats statistical noise.
