I’ve always felt this way about kickstarter:

I’ve supported a couple of KS projects w/ companies I’ve dealt w. before but so many of the things on there are absolute idiocy. And people dump tons of money into them. It’s like a status symbol. “I supported X number of projects and all I got was this crappy T-shirt”.

Me too, but I did support the Brian Banks story.

I’ve so far supported 6 projects on kickstarter, only the first one could have been better done in existing systems.
The first was a webcomic kickstarter to print the first chapter, I’ve met the people involved and had no problem with them using kickstarter for their first print. Subsequent chapters they have done as preorders through their own store, probably the better way to do this.
Second was Takedown, as a big Rainbow 6 fan from back in the day I’m looking forward to it.
Third was Wasteland 2, looking forward to it, but don’t care that much.
Fourth was Starlight Inception, it’s a space combat sim, which is from a local company and I had met one of the guys before.
Fifth was CLANG, looks cool and is very unique and I enjoy german longsword so I went for it.
Sixth is Ringbow, it’s the one I’m the most iffy on, I’m not sure it will live up to the promise, but it should still be cool and useful to me if it’s just ok.

I’ve looked through some of the kickstarter featured projects before and wondered how the people who run kickstarter can seriously feature some of that crap.
I don’t know if its better now, but even in the games section the games that did well were often not featured originally.
I think the people that made kickstarter are a bunch of hipsters that accidentally made something good.
