The Church of The Kristofferson

I love Kris Kristofferson’s music. I think he’s one of America’s greatest Song Writers. I didn’t know this about him.

Wow!

It’s more than that. His father was an Air Force Major General. Then he became a Ranger, Airborne, and then a chopper pilot, rising to the rank of Captain. He had just been appointed a post at West Point teaching when he decided to resign and go to Nashville to write music.

Johnny Cash picked up some of his songs, as did others, but Cash never really did much with them until Kristofferson gave him “Sunday Morning Coming Down” which won Cash “Song of the Year” in 1970. There is a story that Kris landed his chopper on Cash’s lawn to give him that song, along with some others, but I don’t know if that is true or not.

A great American, unafraid to denounce the bad in the military and in America, while celebrating the good.

I listen to this at least once during Memorial Day. Not his song, but he introduces it.

    Service Guarantees Citizenship!

Some of Heinlein’s story ideas are a bit… far fetched.

But the idea from Starship Troopers (the book, not the movie) of requiring government service before being able to vote has always struck a positive chord with me.

Why should you have a say in our country’s politics if you don’t have the conviction to back up your words with action?
