Truth is, 3rd parties in our current system don’t amount to a whole heck of a lot…other than as a means of siphoning off votes from one of the main parties.
However, if we had a preferential system, as Australia does, then 3rd parties actually become viable.
Well in America 3rd Parties gain support and then displace one of the other parties. I think realistically I see many Libertarian candidates are simply choosing to use the Republican infrastructure to run their election campaign, as well as groups like the Tea Party are getting traditional Republicans to swing more towards the libertarian ideals.
The same can be said for Democrats, the “Progressives” (which is just a code word for Socialist) have taken over the party, I think the same can be said for the current Republican party once we get rid of stinkers like Romney, Boehner, and McCain.

I’m all about the Libertarians taking over the Republican party personally.
The fact that States that are uncomfortable with the commoners being armed are just fine with the commoners voting is illustrative.
